Weinberg, Jackier and Maas unwrap their skis.

O

ne of the perils of any
sport is starting from
scratch. Especially as
we dip into our less-flexible
years, our self-consciousness
becomes more acute and we,
thinking of potential failure,
choose not to take the risk.
Waterskiing is one such
risk. I had heard about the
fantastic failures of
beginners. Tales of strained
and aching muscles. Flying
flops and broken hopes.
Normal people falling flat on
their faces, both symbolical-
ly and in reality. It was
enough to swear off water-
skiing forever.
Of course, that was before I
tried it myself. The detrac-
tors said it would take re-
peated attempts before I

would stand on two skis.
They were wrong. After a
false start — the cord came
out of my hands, but I re-
tained perfect starting posi-
tion — I was up and stan-
ding, albeit hunched over
from fear.
Like all good companions,
my spotters (I think the
more apt title is "critics")
motioned for me to go back
and forth through the boat's
wake. Wrong move. With
the agility of a two ton
elephant with fused legs, I
went flying over a very
small wave. First lesson:
don't get too fancy.
A second trip around the
lake produced similar
success. After it was over,
my arms felt like rubber

of Sam Fisher, "ruin the
water for us." When one
boat's motor goes down,
other boats are expected to
help.
Immediately after each
skier's trip on the lake,
fellow boat members critique
the performance. Club Mad
has even videotaped their
own techniques. Not getting
criticized is the worst: It
means you made no im-
provement, took no risks.
But skiing isn't all unplea-
sant rivalry and criticism.
It's camaraderie and friend-
ship to Club Mad members.
On any given morning, you
will find them discussing
movies, restaurants and
where to get really fresh
vegetables. Club Mad sports
their own sweatshirts and
even discusses politics before
heading out on the water.
"We have our own kitchen
cabinet," Mr. Fisher said.
"We have been able to
solve the world's problems at
this table," Mrs. Jackier
said.

freedom and, most impor-
tant, slalom.
Slalom is a form of water-
skiers' hazing. Getting
through a slalom course is a
waterskier's Holy Grail.
Sure enough, Rabbi Yedwab
has done it.
But watch out. Injuries are
common among waterskiers,
whether it's a pulled muscle
or a” strained back. Dr.
Greenberg recommended not
skiing when tired and
avoiding poor equipment at
all costs.
"No matter how careful
you are, those things
happen," he said. "But it's
worth it. Unless you do
something really stupid, you
won't get hurt too bad."
And like in all things, the
potential for injury has its
flip side.
"When somebody falls
good, we thank them for the
laugh," Dr. Greenberg said.
Out on the water, water-
skiers form a loosely-strung
fraternity. They despise
fishermen, who, in the words
