Prof. Jeffries
Vs. Donahue

The Oct. 1 "Donahue"
show featuring Prof.
Leonard Jeffries generated
"no more reaction than
usual for one of our shows on
racial issues," said a
spokeswoman for the talk
show.
"Several dozen" viewers
telephoned the show to
register either their ap-
proval or dismay with the
interview with the City
University of New York
Black Studies chairman who
has been accused of
disseminating anti-
Semitism in and out of his
classroom, said Karen Lip-
pert, "Donahue's" director
of press relations.
The shoW featured clips
from Professor Jeffries' July
20 speech in Albany, N.Y, in
which he claimed that Jews
had helped fund the black
slave trade and that they
had controlled Hollywood's
portrayal of blacks. He
specifically named Jewish
movie moguls.
On "Donahue," the pro-
fessor claimed he had "not
singled out any group" for
manipulating black's
cinematic image.
"You keep saying 'rich
Jews' controlled
Hollywood," countered Mr.
Donahue. "You now say it
doesn't make any difference
if it's any group. But it
makes a difference to you.
It's the Jews, the Jews, the
Jews;'
Mr. Jeffries also asserted
that "Levitts and others"
had helped "create white
suburbs."
Several times during the
broadcast, Mr. Donahue,
who seemed frustrated by
the interview, called himself
a "white boy."
"Whatever language Phil
uses," said Ms. Lippert, "he
tries to make a point, and
it's not grandstanding."

Poll Plots

Two recent polls worth
noting:
• TimeICNN: Forty per-
cent of Americans said the
disputed $10 billion U.S.
loan guarantee to Israel
should be delayed until
Israel agrees to halt set-
tlement in the occupied ter-
ritories, 15 percent said the
guarantee should be given
without such a promise, and
34 said it should not be given
under any circumstances.
• Washington Post: Two
percent of Americans named
Israel as the "one nation
(that poses) the greatest
threat to world peace." ❑
