F
about from the delayed
$10 billion loan guar-
antee to Israel is not
over yet, and judging from
several magazine columns,
neither Israel nor American
Jews have emerged from the
fracas looking particularly
good.
In a New Republic column,
Michael Kinsley wrote that
"whatever you think of the
settlements issue on the
merits, to ask another huge
favor of a country that is al-
ready giving you $3 billion
. . . every year, and to stick
your thumb in that country's
eye at the same time, is a
pretty good definition of
chutzpah."
Mr. Kinsley then scolded
Harvard professor Alan Der-
showitz, who says U.S. Jews
are not "pushy or assertive
enough" to protect their in-
terests or Israel's:
"Claiming that the fruits
of Jewish political chutzpah
are merely Jews' fair share
in the American system
moves you onto dangerous
logical ground. Because of
their organized determina-
tion, general civic in-
volvement, social pro-
minence and — yes — finan-
cial success, Jews enjoy po-
litical influence out of pro-
portion to their share in the
population .. .
"AIPAC, the American
pro-Israel lobby, will be
happy to explain to Professor
Dershowitz that what the
gentiles think does matter.
Appearances do count, after
all, and the appearance of an
all-powerful Jewish lobby
that will stop at nothing to
get its way is self-defeating."
In an essay in Time, editor-
at-large Strobe Talbott par-
tially excused Israeli Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir for
his role in the loan crisis:
"At least, Shamir is
motivated by a sense of what
he believes to be the
historical birthright of his
people."
Mr. Talbott mostly blamed
Israeli Housing Minister
Ariel Sharon, whose goal, he
wrote, "has less to do with
an ideological commitment
to Greater Israel than with
the aggrandizement of his
personal power. His strategy
. . . seems to be to subvert
the peace process, provoke a
crisis with Washington and
then elbow Shamir aside in
the resulting Cabinet
upheaval."
.
Alan Dershowitz:
An "embarrassment?"
In Newsweek, senior writer
Jonathan Alter concluded
that "increasing numbers of
American Jews are coming
to understand that criticism
of Israel is not the same as
anti-Semitism. But they fear
that the line can get thin.
Israeli intransigence and
anti-Israel sentiment could
fuel anti-Semitic fever at
home.
Is Dershowitz
A 'Loudmouth?'
The New Republic's Mike
Kinsley is not the only
writer who's on Alan Der-
showitz's case. The defender
of Leona Helmsley and
Claus von Bulow made Spy
magazine's annual list of the
year's 100 "most annoying,
alarming and appalling peo-
ple, places and things."
"Loudmouth Dersh" rank-
ed 26th on the list for
"embarass(ing) American
Jewry for appointing himself
its spokesman."
Also on the list:
John Sununu (No. 2).: For
being "tubby," taking
"sleazy trips," and
"speaking ill of the Jews."
Blaming the Jews (No. 8):
"Newly released tapes
reveal Nixon blamed Jews
for the 1968 Chicago conven-
tion melee; Dr. Leonard Jef-
fries of City College blamed
Jews for the existence of a
black underclass; Alan Der-
showitz blamed Jews for
lacking chutzpah."
Hitler's Back! (No. 33):
Eastern European
skinheadism; "Nazi Bart" T-
shirts; the computer game
that lets players run concen-
tration camps. Oh, and
David Duke."
