Eleanor Lipkin Schwartz: Back to concerts.

part time at one of her living-
room Steinways and at the
Southfield branch of the
Center for Creative Studies,
where she is still on the fac-
ulty. What had been out of her
grasp, though, was the ability
to spend a concert-sized
amount of time at the key-
board.
Finally, this past year, her
strength restored, Mrs.
Schwartz announced she was
back to performing. She has
done some local concerts and
plans a fall schedule. She'd
like to play at a steady clip,
though not at the arduous
touring level she knew in
Europe.
Meanwhile, Eleanor and
Toma Schwartz continue see-
ing students who range in age
from 5 to 60 (their daughter,
Claire, a U-M student, chan-
nels her musical talent into
singing).
In Mrs. Schwartz's view, to-
day's students "have the op-
portunity to learn from
generations of musical artists
and composers, many of whom
migrated to America for ar-
tistic freedom." The secret for
a successful student hinges
not just on talent, but on
motivation and intelligence as
well. "I'll work my head off for
anyone who has the will to
learn," Mrs. Schwartz says.
As for her own future, Mrs.
Schwartz intends to perform

as long as she's able. She
knows no better life. "There's
a brotherhood among artists
that is extremely strong," she
says. "I've been very fortunate
that music is a major ingre-
dient in my life, and that I've
had great, great teachers?' 0
