employed by Thorn Apple
Valley as a product manag-
er.
Today the company
slaughters more than 10,000
hogs a day, from which
about 300 million pounds of
processed meats are sold a
year.
"He was always very am-
bitious," recalls Louis Pozez,
the former CEO of Payless
Shoes who served on the
Thorn Apple Valley board of
directors for many years un-
til his retirement. "My feel-
ing — even at that time —
was that Henry would do
very well.
"I've often wondered what
made him so successful,"
Mr. Pozez says. "Maybe it
was his background. Maybe
it was his limited education.
Maybe it was the war," he
says. "I guess it was hard
work, ambition and trying
very hard to be successful.
And he is completely
unafraid of people.
"When he first moved to
Detroit, he worked around
the clock," Mr. Pozez says.
"At 3 a.m., he and his part-
ners would be at their little
butcher shop. I didn't have
to work as hard as that."
To those who have worked
with him, Henry Dorfman
has always been a hands-on
executive known at the corn-
pany for joining assembly
workers on the line and
showing them how to step up
the pace. They say his pros-
perity is a result of ag-
gressiveness, astute busi-
ness skills and a certain
perseverance.
"He's got good timing and
a good feel for people. He's
also got a temper and he gets
mad at people," says Ted
Wilson, assistant to com-
pany vice president Eli
Dorfman. "But he knows the
business. He's always been
in the business. And he is
always right.
"If he sees somebody mak-
ing a cut wrong in the meat,
he'll correct them," Mr.
Wilson says. "And they will
know he is right. Henry has
done all of the jobs they do —
boning, cutting, packing."
Henry Dorfman is slightly
bothered by those who make
an issue out of pork. Even
his wife won't allow the pro-
ducts in their kosher kit-
chen, but the Dorfman fami-
ly doesn't see any problem
selling the product.
He says he came to this
country hungry, with a wife
and strong desire to make
some money. He didn't see a
future in the kosher meat
business.
He provides a stock re-
sponse to anyone who ques-
tions kashrut."The meat is
