Music Society
Opens Season

The Juilliard String
Quartet will lead off the
roster of chamber music ar-
tists that will celebrate the
University Musical Society's
50th Anniversary of chamber
music presentation in
Rackham Auditorium 4 p.m.
Sept 29.
Former in 1946, the
Juilliard Quartet made its
Ann Arbor debut in 1962,
followed by concerts in 1974
and 1979. Its current
members are Robert Mann
and Joel Smirnoff, violinists;
Samuel Rhodes, violists; and
Joel Korsnick, cellist. The
program includes Mozart's
Quartet in B-flat, K.589;
Elliot Carter's Quartet No. 1
(1951); and Beethoven's
Quartet in F major, Op. 135.

Prior to the concert is a
Phillips pre-concert presenta-
tion at 3 p.m., also in the
Rackham Building. Mr. Gail
W. Rector, UMS President
Emeritus, will speak about
"Fifty Years and Counting:
University Musical Society
Concerts in Rackham Audito-
rium and a Flip Side to this
Classic Record." The presen-
tation is free and open to the
public.

JET Elects
Officers, Board

The Jewish Ensemble
Theatre of West Bloomfield
has elected officers for the
1991-92 season.
Mary Lou Zieve of Bloom-
field HIlls is JET's president.
She is assisted by Frank M.
Bryant of Huntington Woods,
vice president; Dr. Phoebe
Mainster of Bloomfield Hills,
secretary; and Iry Protetch of
Southfield, treasurer. Im-
mediate past president,
James M. August of Bloom-
field Hills, remains on the ex-
ecutive committee.
Newly elected to the JET
board are Marci Benson of
Southfield, Evelyn Kasle of
Franklin and Bea Luft of
Bloomfield Hills.
JET's 1991-92 season will
open Sept. 11 with Crossing
Delancey, a romantic comedy
by Susan Sandler.
