American Artists
Concert Series

The Waverly Consort and
the American Artists Series
Chamber Players will be
featured in the 1991-92 five-
concert season of the
American Artists Series at
Kingswood Auditorium on
the Cranbrook campus,
Bloomfield Hills.
On Feb. 16, comedy star Pat
Carroll will present a one-
woman show, "Bits 'n Pieces,"
as an added event. Ms. Car-
roll, of TV, film and stage, will
appear at 3 p.m.
The Waverly Consort will
appear at 2 p.m. April 5. The
six singers and four in-
strumentalists are known for
recordings and TV ap-
pearances. They explore the
music of Spain, church and
secular, and the outcast Sefar-
dim at the time of Columbus's
voyage 500 years ago.
A historian traveling with
the group will discuss
Spanish culture and politics
of this era in a short lecture
one hour prior to the concert.
Principals from the Detroit
Symphopny Orchestra who
are members of the AAS
Chamber Players will paly at
three concerts. Principal
clarinetist Theodore Oien is
featured at 3 p.m. Nov. 24;
principal oboist Donald
Baker at 3 p.m. Jan. 12, and
principal flutist Ervin
Monroe at 3 p.m. March 8.
The Series will conclude at
7 p.m. May 3 with the AAS
Chamber Players, featuring
music for strings and piano.
The Chamber Players, most
with AAS since its founding
in 1970, consist of DSO musi-
cians Linda Snedden Smith
and Ron Fischer, violins;
John Thurman, cello, and
Hart Hollman, viola.
The fifth regular member of
the group is Joan Freeman,
concert pianist who is founder
and artistic director of the
American Artists Series.
