the audience viewed the
comedy singing group
Capitol Steps, who made fun
of every politician. Impor-
tant issues like the national
debt and day care were also
satirized with lyrics to pop-

Elayne Metzger of Farm-
ington Hills reports that she
and her husband Joe Met-
zger had the honor of at-
tending the first bar mitzvah
in the small town of Pt.
Townsend, Wash., which has
a population around 7,000.
The bar mitzvah boy,
Spruce Metzger, is their
grandson. Proud parents are
Robbie Metzger a former
Detroiter, and Hilary
Markey Metzger, a former
Flint resident.
Since there is no syn-
agogue in Pt. Townsend, the
service was held in a chapel
at a former military in-
stallation. The Torah was
borrowed from another
community, and had been
smuggled out of Europe dur-
ing the Holocaust. Mr. and
Mrs. Robbie Metzger taught
their son his bar mitzvah
portion and are instrumen-
tal in organizing the Jewish
community in town. ❑
