LOOKING BACK on col-
umns of yesteryears .. .
FEB. 1, 1980 . . . "Oldies
from Lindy's menu in New
York . . . 'Customer: 'How
come the rice pudding with
raisins is $1 and the rice pud-
ding without is $1.25?!' Lin-
dy's waiter: 'It costs us 25
cents in labor to take out the
raisins' . . . 'I'm sorry, said
Louie the Gyp, 'but I haven't
any money to pay for the
meal! 'That's all right, said
the Lindy's cashier. 'We'll
write your name on the wall
and you can pay the next time
you come in! 'Don't do that.
Everybody who comes in will
see it! 'Oh no, they won't.
Your overcoat will be hanging
over it!
"Lindy's waiter: 'Tea or cof-
fee?' Customer: 'Coffee with-
out cream! Lindy's waiter:
`You'll have to take it without
milk, we have no cream!
"Customer: 'Waiter, these
are very small oysters! Lin-
dy's waiter: 'Yes, sir.'
Customer: 'And they don't ap-
pear to be very fresh! Lindy's
waiter: 'Then lucky for you
they're small!
"A man standing at Lindy's
bar was drinking by himself.
Every few minutes he would
let out a laugh and then say,
`Aw nertz."What's the idea?'
the bartender finally said.
`You laugh and then say `Aw
nertz!"Oh; explained the bar-
fly, 'you see I'm telling jokes
to myself, and I've heard
them all before! "

JUNE 20, 1975 . . . "Linda
Munson (Steven), daughter of
Evelyn and Lou Grant,
teacher at Green Elementary
School in West Bloomfield,
was told by Lou that he and
Sam Fertel were going to play
golf at Shenandoah Country
Club . . . Linda said they
would pass by her school and
asked them to come in and
meet the children . . . say they
were reporters . . . The kids
asked questions and the
fellows faked answers . . .
• After they left, Linda told the
youngsters that they weren't
really reporters . . . it was her
father . . . A young student
raised her hand and asked,
`Didn't you recognize
him?' "
