"DISCRIMINATION!"
says Jocelyn Ruth Krieger.
"For over 11 years I was the
only known Jewish woman
leader of an all-male Gypsy
orchestra, 'Jocelyn and Her
Gypsies.' But when The
Jewish News did a story a
while back on past Jewish
band leaders, I was forgotten.
Our business boomed with
weddings, bar mitzvahs, par-
ties, donor dinners. Finally,
one of the Gypsies asked me,
`How come nobody likes Gyp-
sy music anymore but Jewish
people? The only ones that
ever hire us are Jewish!'
"Gypsies are very secretive
about their customs. While I
socialized with their families
when we weren't working,
they didn't like me to tell
`gadjos' (non-Gypsies) about
their customs. At Gypsy wed-
dings since the men are all
musicians, they are busy
playing the music while the
Gypsy women dance in a
large circle. The first Jewish
wedding we played where the
women danced the hora, my
orchestra became very upset.
`Who taught them the Gypsy
dance?' they demanded to
know.
"At a very large wedding at
Shaarey Zedek, the Gypsies
were to play the traditional
`Wedding March' for a very
important couple. The bride's
parents had stressed to me
that the music was to be with
proper decorum. Since I was
wearing my Gypsy costume
and not participating in the
music for the ceremony, I sent
the Gypsies into the sanc-
tuary with instructions to
play only the 'Wedding
March.'
"Everything
went
beautifully until the end of
the ceremony. I had recently
taught them to play, `Chossin,
Kalleh, Mazel Toy!' which
they knew by name only as
`Mazel 'Thy!' And that is exact-
ly what they played instead of
the 'Wedding March.' Every-
one in the family was upset.
" 'I told you to play the
`Wedding March.' Why did
you play `Mazel Tov!'?'
`Everybody asked for it the
Gypsies answered. 'Honest!
The guy that got married
banged down his foot and
everybody hollered, `Mazel
Tov!' so we played it!'
"I retired my orchestra
when my husband Byron and
I decided we wanted a larger
family. As soon as the Gypsies
found out I was pregnant,
they filed for unemployment
compensation which was of
course, denied. I asked them
what they had listed as the
cause for unemployment. 'We
told them our leader was
pregnant,' my violinist said.
`Nobody's gonna' hire a preg-
nant Gypsy!'
"I wonder how many brides
still have the 'Golden Earring
of Friendship' presented by us
in a special ceremony at their
weddings? I also taught them
how to say, 'I love you!' in the
Gypsy language. The Gypsies
always said to be careful in
saying it because it also
meant, 'I want you!' "
