names and birthdates sewn
into the circumcision cloth
were particularly important
because this was the only of-
ficial birth record for Jews,
who were not recorded by the
church which ruled here.
There are other reminders,
too, of the special situation of
the Jews of this area. On one
wall is a map of the county
that belonged to the popes in
the 17th century, which in-
cludes the four cities in this
district where Jews were pro-
tected. On another wall is
posted an ordinance from the
bishop of Cavaillon, dated
1781, which gave Jews —
finally — permission to live
outside the restricted Jewish
quarter.
In one display case are
prayer books used by the Jews
of Cavaillon — books printed
in Amsterdam and Venice
because the Jews here were
forbidden to print their own
prayer books. "All four com-
munities had their own
distinct traditions," explains
the guide, "so they each had
their own separate prayer
books." These books, together
with the other ritual objects,
were found in the attic of the
19th century synagogue in
Cavaillon — not the first
house of worship for this
historic community — where
they had been hidden for
safekeeping.
Perhaps it's the drama of
this history that causes
visitors to the museum to
write reviews in the
museum's guest book.
They've come from Israel, the
United States and all over
Europe — and they are sur-
prised — and delighted — to
discover so much history, says
the guide, as he opens the
guest book. "Very moving and
very beautiful," wrote one
guest. "We are happy to view
this little gem," wrote
another.
Visitors are even more sur-
prised to see the beautiful, or-
nate synagogue on the second
story of the same building.
From the outside, it looks at
first glance like a lavish
French residence in Louis XV
style. Only the Hebrew letters
sculpted on the door give
evidence that this is far more
than a secular mansion.
Inside, too, the design is
elaborate and fanciful, with
pastel colors, wrought iron
balcony, Greek columns and
ornate light fixtures. No
wonder cameras keep clicking
as the visitors gaze at the in-
tricacy of this synagogue,
with its polished wood floors,
gold-leaf ornamentation and
pink and blue walls.
Carefully restored in 1987,
the synagogue is no longer
used for prayer. Instead, it
