given the political climate
over there," she said. "The
Communist Party still con-
trolled the media. American-
style television ads were just
not realistic."
Instead, the consultants
focused on such basics as
polling, canvassing and
grass-roots organizing.
When Mr. Yeltsin awed
the world by standing up to
Soviet tanks and troops,
many of the American-
trained political leaders
were at his side.
"We had calls from them
when the coup began," Ms.
Laszlo said. "They were
taking their fax machines
and going into hiding. They
were in positions of leader-
ship during Yeltsin's
resistance. We believe our
training did make a differ-
ence in what happened."
The Jewish community,
she said, played a major role
on both sides of the ocean.
More than half of the polit-
ical consultants involved in
the Campaigns and Elec-
tions programs were Jewish,
she said. "And many of the
Yeltsin people are Jewish —
a surprising number — and
they played a major role in
this."
Helping the Soviet Union
move towards democracy,
she said, is a critical element.
"A lot of people are work-
ing in the Jewish commun-
ity to get people out," she
said. "But to me, it was im-
portant to work with the
ones who were remaining.
It's not enough to give them
prayer books. You have to
make sure they have the
freedom to use the prayer
books."

Groups Differ
On Cross Burning
Two major Jewish groups
are coming down on diff-
erent sides of an important
case that the Supreme Court
will take up in its October
session.
The case involves a "cross
burning" ordinance in St.
Paul, Minn., designed to
prohibit that hate crime. A
Minnesota teen-ager charged
under the ordinance has
challenged its constitu-
tionality, saying the law is
too broad.
The Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith has
argued that the law should
stand.
But the American Jewish
Congress sees things diff-
erently.
The group recently signed
on to a friend of the court
brief that also included the
American Civil Liberties
Union and a white
supremacist group. ❑
