M
iami Beach is often
known as the unof-
ficial capital of
Jewish America — and for
good reason.
On this small island in
Southeastern Florida — it's a
separate municipality from
the city of Miami — signs of
an active Jewish life are
everywhere. Kosher restau-
rants abound. Posters adver-
tise Jewish cultural events.
There are even several streets
named for rabbis.
On the boardwalk, young-
sters often wear bathing
trunks and kipot. On the sun-
ny streets, the sounds of Yid-
dish mingle with English and
staccato Spanish.
The local tourist guidebook
lists as many synagogues as
churches — one of the few
cities anywhere with such a
ratio. They range from modest
shuls to imposing temples.
For the Jewish traveler,
visiting several Miami Beach
synagogues is a way to sam-
ple the flavor of Jewish life in
this well-known resort.
Since that flavor is multi-
cultural, Temple Moses on
Normandy Isle is a good star-
ting point for a synagogue
tour. This synagogue is home
to one of the two Cuban
Jewish congregations on the
island; and inside the modern
building, the Spanish in-
fluence is strong.
Posters of the American
Sephardic Federation deco-
rate the main office. A mural
by a Spanish artist hangs in
the foyer. Spanish books fill
the shelves in the library. In
the 300-seat sanctuary, the
rabbi delivers his sermons in
Spanish.
A dozen years ago, members
of this Orthodox congregation
worshipped in a small shul.
But their numbers kept grow-
ing, so they launched a fund-
raising drive, made plans for
larger quarters and dedicated
their new synagogue in 1980.
Just a short walk away on
Bonita Drive is Ohev Shalom.
It looks like the ideal
synagogue for the tropics, a
gleaming white building
framed by palm trees.
This congregation, like
Temple Moses, has seen
dramatic growth. First, the
members met in an apart-
ment, then a beachfront
home, then a rented store —

and finally, on Rosh
Hashanah in 1967, they held
their first service in their
newly built synagogue,
designed by Cuban-born
Jewish architect Isaac Sklar,
who became a prominent
developer in South Florida.
Inside the sanctuary, the
white walls are plain except
for the imported marble wall
near the ark. Stained glass
windows gleam above the ark,
and crystal chandeliers are
suspended from the ceiling.
Members of this Orthodox
congregation all live within
walking distance of the tem-
ple. And though they're in a
famous resort town, they have
all the facilities for leading an
observant Jewish life. Their
children attend nearby
Hebrew Academy Day School;
the women use a mikvah on
Michigan avenue; kosher food
