'Storm Trooper'
Loses Bout

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Pro-
fessional wrestling, accor-
ding to John Severino, pres-
ident of Prime Ticket Net-
work, is a combination of
sports and entertainment.
According to most knowl-
edgeable sports people and
fans over the age of 10, it is
pure opera bouffe.
But it draws crowds, espe-
cially on television.
Therefore, to see a per-
former with the stage name
"Storm Trooper" hamming
it up in the ring, wearing
tights emblazoned with a
swastika and simulating the
"heil Hitler" salute, was too
much for Rabbi Abraham
Cooper, associate dean of the
Simon Wiesenthal Center in
Los Angeles.
He complained to the
South Atlantic Wrestling
Association, for which
"Storm Trooper" was then
working.
Cooper wasn't the first to
complain about the "Storm
Trooper," Bob Gold, vice
president of public relations
at Prime Ticket,. explained
in a letter to the rabbi.
The wrestler, whose real
name is Chuck Smith, also
wrestled with the United
States Wrestling Associ-
ation but was banned, Gold
wrote, "and steps have been
taken to ensure that the
program is no longer offen-
sive."
SAWA co-owner Rick
Lambeth said the associ-
ation will keep Smith, whom
no one has accused of being a
Nazi, but will give him a
different costume and a diff-
erent act.

Israeli Navy
Tests Missile

Tel Aviv (JTA) -- The
Israeli navy successfully
test-fired its new Barak anti-
missile missile Aug. 16, a
seaborne weapon that cre-
ated a stir at the Paris Air
Show this past spring.
The 7-foot, 215-pound mis-
sile carries a 48-pound
warhead and fits aboard a
Saar-5 missile patrol boat.
It soars vertically at twice
the speed of sound to
intercept incoming missiles
at ranges from 1,600 feet to
over 12 miles.
Designed by Rafael, the
state weapons development
authority, and manufac-
tured by Israel Aircraft In-
dustries, the Barak is in-
tended for export as well as
use in home waters.
