SHIRLEE BLOOM'S

TRADITIONAL
ROSH HASHANAH CARRY-OUT MENU

for a 1993 "I Do" session.
Number 13 for Excalibur
. . . and another big one .. .
"Wait'll next year," says Mar-
ty Wilk. "It'll be even better,"
as he beamed at all his guests
having so much fun.
FORGIVE ME for being
too critical of the recent Alan
King show at Pine Knob
sponsored by Miller Lite in
association with The Jewish
News . . . Those who never
saw him before may totally
disagree with me . . . and for
good reason . . . he is still an
entertaining gentleman.
But I've seen Alan King
about five times . . . and at his
best . . . The Alan King I us-
ed to see was sharp and with
fresh material that literally
had the audience in tears .. .
His poise and presentation at
Pine Knob were those of a
stage veteran and perhaps
Alan's weak delivery could be
forgiven because of a pur-
ported sore mouth . . . But
there was no excuse for his
lack of good material . . . and
the use of foul language
which he seldom used before.
You can tell when a season-
ed performer is merely going
through the paces to take up
his alloted time on stage .. .
The crisp, staccato-like reper-
toire was gone as a seeming-
ly tired Alan King looked at
his watch (something I never
saw him do).
He was gracious enough to
come to The Jewish News
afterglow following his perfor-
mance, but didn't mingle as
he always did or move from
one spot during his short
visit.
The comedienne before him
was to warm up the audience
. . . Paula Poundstone's new
material and stage presence
were most enjoyable.
Best parts of the evening
besides the conviviality of be-
ing with our fellow workers at
The Jewish News happened
before the show . . . Dinner at
Pine Knob introduced us to
dimpled waitress Donna
Karalunas, whose great smile
and personable ways were
high attributes of relaxing joy
to say nothing of her
efficiency.
Also bumping into Faygo
Pop's Mort Feigenson who I
hadn't seen in 40 years .. .
and reminiscing of the days at
Crossman Elementary while
Herman Kiefer Hospital was
being built across the street
. . . and seeing Rudy Newman
back to his healthy ways in
recovering from a stroke.

DISA 'N DATA . . . Magic
show is at Pearl City
Southfield two Sundays, Aug.
25 and Sept. 22, 6-8 p.m. with
magician Ron Cee . . . Contest
among employees brought

Hillary Smith's hubby a gift
with the $100 she won
"Tavern On 13" was the win-
ning entry by Hillary, hostess
at Morel's, who renamed the
former Michael's, Matt Pren-
tice's newest restaurant on 13
Mile east of Southfield . . .
Bernie Glieberman's Cross-
winds Communities, Inc. soon
breaks ground on $10 million
worth of homes (135 in Royal
Oak to be called Charter
Oaks Homes) . . . Years back,
as a boy, Bernie was a bagger
at the Wrigley supermarket
on Seven Mile .. .
Cabaret show with music
and lyrics of the Golden Age
of the American musical
theater opened last week
with "Mark Davis Presents
Downstairs at Punchinello's"
at his restaurant in Birm-
ingham . . . August features
"Cole Porter — the '20s and
'30s" . . . "Where did Marge
Robbins get the red garbage
bags for her 4th of July par-
ty?" asks one of the attendees
. . . It wasn't easy, but Marge
finally found them at the
Huntington Woods Fire Dept.
. . . Top oldies music will be
terpsi fare for Summer
Singles Dance by the Greater
West Bloomfield Singles, 7:30
p.m. tonight at Santia Hall on

JULY 18, 1975 . . .

"CHILDREN'S DEPT. . . .
Asked if his little brother
could talk yet, 8-year-old Bob-
by Seligman replied disgust-
edly, 'Nam, he can't, and why
should he learn? All David
has to do is yell a while and
he can have everything in the
house worth having.' " .. .
"Michael Grunsky, 6-year-
old son of Ruth and Sam
Grunsky, was told by a
friend's mother that she
heard he had a new baby at
his house . . . `Aw, I don't
think he's so very new,'
replied little 'Michael. 'The
way he cries he must have
lots of experience!' "
JULY 25, 1975 . . . "A heart-
broken little girl was 6-year-
old Marilyn Stover when her
pet canary died . . . To pacify
her a bit, dad Max Stover
gave Marilyn an empty cigar
box and, with much cere-
mony, assisted in burying the
bird in the backyard of their
West Bloomfield home . . .
`Daddy,' whispered little
Marilyn, after the funeral
was over, 'do you think my
canary will go to heaven?' .. .
Max said he was certain it
would and asked why she ask-
ed . . . 'I was only thinking,'
murmured the youngster,
`how mad God will be when
he opens the box and finds it
isn't cigars after all.' " ❑
