organizations. JDC also pro-
vides subsidies to teachers
participating in the adult
study programs for men and
women, as well as an educa-
tional development fund to
help the schools with in-
service training and cur-
riculum enhancement.
The JDC also sponsors
sports, cultural events and in-
formal religious programs at
the large and well-equipped
youth center in Casablanca.
Seminars have been
organized in Morocco for
social workers and educators
from local communities and
neighboring countries.
To enable the aged and
needy to live out their lives in
dignity, JDC, in partnership
with the local community,
provides cash assistance to
hundreds of indigent Jews in
Tunis and other cities. These
people have no family to care
for them, and rely on grants
for food, rent and other
necessities.
JDC also supports medical
services, residential homes
for the elderly and Jewish
education for children and
adults.
Funded in part by Detroit's
Allied Jewish Campaign,
JDC has served as the over-
seas arm of the American
Jewish community since
1914.

German Jews
Protest Mining

Bonn (JTA) — Jews and
Gypsies are protesting a
gypsum-mining project
under way at the site of
the former Dora-Nordhausen
slave labor camp in eastern
Germany, arguing that the
area should be preserved as
a memorial to victims of the
Holocaust.
But the company that
extracts gypsum in that
area, Harzer Anhydritwerke,
vowed to continue with the
mine, saying that 300 jobs are
at stake.
A Nordhausen town offi-
cial, Joachim Claus, said
last week that the company
is all but demolishing the
site of the concentration
camp and former Nazi fac-
tory, which was hidden deep
within a hill called Berg
Kohnstein.
"We told them to stop, but
they just won't listen," Mr.
Claus said.
The dispute is the latest of
a series of battles that have
been waged over plans to
make commercial use out of
concentration camp sites in
what was formerly East
Germany.
