Morocco, Tunisia Jews
Get Aid From JDC
Shrinking populations have
led the Jewish communities
of Morocco and Tunisia to
centralize their institutions,
according to Detroit's
Marlene Borman, who recent-
ly visited the two countries on
behalf of the American
Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee (JDC).
Mrs. Borman, who is on the
JDC board, went to Morocco
and Tunisia with the African
and Asia Area Committee to
analyze needs, evaluate ser-
vices and update the
humanitarian organization
on the situation faced by
those Jewish populations.
Community structures con-
tinue to exist in most of the
Moroccan and Tunisian cities
and towns that once had sub-
stantial numbers of Jewish
citizens. As their Jewish
populations shrink, the com-
munities are hard pressed to
provide for the increasing
needs of their aged and to
maintain the schools and pro-
grams for the younger
generation.
While there still are schools
and agencies for younger peo-
ple in cities like Marrakesh
and Tunis, Mrs. Borman said,
"the communities are win-
ding down."
The dwindling Jewish
population of Tunisia is fin-
ding it more difficult to fund
or staff vital community ser-
vices and institutions. Except
for the 2,000-year-old Jewish
community on the island of
Djerba, Tunisia's 2,000-strong
community consists mainly of
elderly people and is not
renewing itself, she said.
"In Djerba, there are
schools for Jewish children,
and they have a viable com-
munity," said Mrs. Borman.
The 700-member community
has children and young
adults and it is vibrant, she
said.
In Tunis, meanwhile, most
of the children have left for
Israel, France or Canada.
"There is an elderly popula-
tion that JDC is trying to
take care of with relief and
welfare."
The situation in Morocco is
similar. Many of the com-
munal institutions are being
centered in Casablanca, the
country's capital. The com-
munity in Marrakesh is get-
ting smaller, and those who
remain are getting older.
According to Mrs. Borman,
the Jews of North Africa are
made up of Berber Jews, who
have lived there for two
millennia, and the
Sepharadim, who came after
the expulsion from Spain 500
years ago. The two groups live
side by side but have main-
tained their cultural
differences.
JDC continues to provide
relief, Jewish education and
other programs _ for these
historic communities.
In Morocco, programs for
the elderly include a two-
week day camp for residents
of old age homes, daily pro-
grams and holiday celebra-
tions at clubs for the mobile
elderly and a Jewish Service
Corps volunteer to the
Casablanca Home for the Ag-
ed, home to 115 residents.
To serve the needs of Moroc-
co's Jewish youth, JDC con-
tinues to support schools
maintained by various
