The Ethnic Connection

Ann Arbor Klezmers
At Yiddish Concert

The 13th Annual Yiddish
Concert in the Park will take
place 7 p.m. Aug. 18 in Oak
Park's Shepherd Park at
Church and Northfield.

The Ethnic Connection, an
Ann Arbor-based klezmer
group consists of David
Owens on accordion, Neil
Alexander on trumpet, Mar-
vin Brode on contrabass
balalaika, Ralph Katz on
clarinet and Nan Nelson on
mandolin. David also is a
physicist doing computer soft-
ware design. Neil is in
geriatric medicine. Marvin is
a psychoanalyst. Ralph is a

mathematician doing com-
puter programming. Nan is a
musician and a member of
the Detroit Balalaika
Orchestra.
The Ethnic Connection
plays ethnic ' dance music
from Romanian horas to Rus-
sian shers to Serbian kolas.
The Workmen's Circle co-
sponsors this free program
with the Jewish Community
Council, the Sarah Gold
Philanthropic Fund and the
Sholem Aleichem.
Please bring your own
chairs. In case of rain, the
concert will be held at Oak
Park High School.

B'nai B'rith Dinner
To Cite Jack Robinson

Jack A. Robinson; chair-
man and chief executive of-
ficer of Perry Drug - Stores,
Inc., will be presented with
the 1991 B'nai B'rith Great
American Traditions Award,
B'nai B'rith's highest honor.
The award will be given at a
community-wide tribute din-
ner Nov. 19 at the Westin
Hotel in Detroit.
Mr. Robinson is being cited
"for his vision, leadership and
contributions to the com-
munal, educational and
cultural life in Michigan and
worldwide!"
Mr. Robinson has received
numerous awards and honors,
including: Wayne State
University Corporate Leader-
ship Award, Jewish National
Fund Tree of Life Award,
March of Dimes Humani-
tarian Award, Weizmann
Research Institute Award,
Variety Club Humanitarian
Award. In September, he will
be awarded the Fred M. But-
zel Memorial Award for Dis-
tinguished Community Ser-
vice by the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit.
He is a vice president of the
United Jewish Charities, past
vice president of the Jewish

Federation, and serves on the
boards of many civic and
philanthropic organizations.
Proceeds from the
November dinner will benefit
the B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization. In Michigan,
Hillel maintains a presence
at Wayne State University,
University of Michigan,
Michigan State University,
Eastern Michigan University,
Western Michigan University
and Oakland University.
Dr. Owen Z. Perlman is the
B'nai B'rith dinner commit-
tee chairman. For reserva-

Detroit area young adults
are invited to visit the
neighborhoods where their
parents and grandparents
grew up on the Jewish
Federation's Young Adult
