Israel Radio's English-
language shortwave service,
which is aimed at the United
States, has been abruptly
cancelled. The Israel Broad-
casting Authority wants to
use funds from the broad-
casts for programming for E-
thiopian and Soviet emigres.
"I think it's a very bad
mistake — and I found a lot
of people in Israel who
agreed," said Malcolm
Hoenlein, director of the
Conference of Presidents of
Major American Jewish
Organizations, who raised
the issue in meetings in
Jerusalem last week. "Given
the peace process and all the
critical issues coming up,
cutting off this source of in-
formation is a bad move."
