Diane Colton, 73,
Numismatist

Max Stollman, 87, of
Bloomfield Hills, died Aug.
11.
A member of Young Israel
of Oak-Woods, Mr. Stollman
was a life member of the
Zionist Organization of
America and was active in
the Allied Jewish Campaign,
the Jewish Federation and
the Jewish National Fund. In
1975, the JNF honored Mr.
Stollman, his wife and
brother by creating in their
names a recreation picnic
area in a park in Beit
Shemesh, Israel.
He was a longtime sup-
porter of Bar-Ilan University,
which in 1978 honored Mr.
Stollman and his wife, Frieda,
with doctor of humane letters
degrees.
Together with his brother,
Phillip, Max Stollman was
the first to establish a dor-
mitory at Bar-Ilan Universi-
ty. The brothers later financ-
ed the construction of the
Bar-Ilan administration
building. They also provided
hundreds of scholarships and
were instrumental in pro-
moting Bar-Ilan adminis-
tered courses for students
from Oriental and Moslem
countries and for high school
students from disadvantaged
families.
Max Stollman also helped
initiate the Stollman Israel
Scholarship Fund, which pro-
vided for hundreds of
students in Israeli boarding
schools.
Max and Phillip Stollman
were co-founders of the Bilt-
more Properties Corp., estab-
lished in Detroit and now
located in Troy. Created in the
1940s, Biltmore was a pioneer
in residential construction
within Detroit and surroun-
ding cities. Its development
properties include the
Somerset Apartments in
Troy, and the Ramblewood

Diane Colton, 73, of Bloom-
field Hills, died Aug. 8
Mrs. Colton was an ex-
ecutive and vice president of
Domestic Linen Supply until
she retired in 1984. She
handled distribution of Israeli
stamps, was a member of the
American Lilly Association,
Jewish Retired Professional
Institute, Allied Jewish Cam-
paign and ORT. She was a
Jewish Home for Aged
1,000-hour-volunteer, a
Hadassah Life Member, past
president of Israel Numis-
matic Society, a board mem-
ber of and Midwest director of
the American Israel Numis-
matic Society, a member of
the Israel Philatelic Society.
Mrs. Colton leaves her hus-
band, Sol; daughter and son-
in-law, Marilyn and Norton
Weiss of Bloomfield Hills;
sons and daughters-in-law,
Bruce and Glorida of Bloom-
field Hills, David and Francy
of West Bloomfield, Leonard
and Judee of Bloomfield
Hills; eight grandchildren.

Harry Schwartz, 81,
Store Owner

Harry Schwartz, 81, of
Southfield, died Aug. 12.
Mr. Schwartz was the
former owner of the Small
Fry Children's Shop in Oak
Park. He was a member of
B'nai B'rith Pisgah Lodge,
the Pinsker Progressive Aid
Society, the Masonic Lodge of
Oak Park and was a Crafts-
man Shriner.
He is survived by his wife,
Ann; sisters and brother-in-
law, Shirley Kraft of South-
field, Rose Slotnick of Oak
Park, Edith and Joseph
Deitch of Southfield.

Were I asked to sum up the
age-long trend of Jewish his-
tory, I should answer in
three words: Quality versus
quantity. All down the
years, from Joshua to the
War of Independence, we
have been the few withstan-
ding the many.
