House Of Denmark Announces Our
ACME/TRAVERSE CITY

staffers were doting over a
new mother and baby on
their way home. In another
wing, doctors were discuss-
ing cases in the hallways.
Dr. Steve Arbit, who just
completed his residency in
internal medicine, has
begun another three-year
Sinai residency in rehabili-
tation medicine.
"People here are just con-
cerned about who will be cut.
They don't want it to be
them," Dr. Arbit said. "But
they understand that if the
hospital were to go under,
everybody would get cut.
Everyone is doing their part
to continue doing their jobs.
"We must band together
and be positive," Dr. Arbit
said. "My brother (Phil) is a
fourth-year medical student
interested in obstetrics and
gynecology. I told him I'll be
here in three years. It is safe
here."
Mr. Watts said it is possi-
ble for Sinai to make it
alone. Mergers, he said, are
not being considered. The
consultants hope the
hospital will posture itself to
maintain a separate and
Jewish identity. But affilia-
tion with a health care group
or groups are possible, Mr.
Watts said.
"If this hospital makes it,
it will be through an affilia-
tion ," said Dr. Leo
Eisenberg, a Sinai lung and
cancer specialist. "It is not
the Jewish Federation that
will rescue it."
Mr. Watts is asking staff to
phone in comments to an
employee information
hotline.
The hotline has been
registering between two and
three calls per day, said
Karen Hryciuk, media and
outreach coordinator.
"There is a lot of anxiety.
We get a lot of telephone
hang-ups," Ms. Hryciuk
said. "Some of the callers are
worried about their homes.
Some are concerned because
we don't know what will
happen, or when it will
happen."
In his first staff memo,
dated July 31, Mr. Watts
said he plans to maintain
regular contact with
employees through salmon-
colored memos labeled
"Performance Improvement
Initiative Updates."
In his July 31 memo, Mr.
Watts outlined an eight-part
vision for Sinai. First on the
list was "significant Jewish
influence on health care ser-
vices in greater Detroit."
The employee memo stated
the hospital is forming an
employee advisory com-
mittee to assist administra-
tors. ❑
