Jacob Raimi
Jacob Raimi,
Of Raimi's Curtains
Jacob Raimi of West Bloom-
field, died Aug. 6.
Mr. Raimi was co-founder
with his late wife, Sylvia, of
Raimi's Curtains, one of
Michigan's largest curtain
and drapery firms for more
than 60 years.
Mr. Raimi was born in
Nasielsk, Poland, in 1897. He
fought in the army of the new
Polish state under its first
president, Pilsudski. He was
captured by Communists in
the Ukraine and kept
prisoner for two years. Then
he escaped and made his way
to the United States to join
his wife and young son.
Raimi's Curtains was
founded in 1924 on the east
side of Detroit. At its peak in
the late 1980s, the firm
operated retail stores • in all
the major shopping centers
and a wholesale distribution
center in Detroit.
He leaves his sons and
daughters-in-law, Abraham
and Rosalie, Ralph and Sonya
of New York, Shepherd of
New York; six grandchildren;
eight great-grandchildren.
Edward Ferber,
Roofing Contractor
Edward M. Ferber, 83, of
Oak Park, died Aug. 5.
Mr. Ferber was a retired
roofing contractor with
Ferber Roofing for 40 years.
He was a volunteer Russian
interpreter for Sinai Hospital
for more than five years, a
member of Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses and the Masons,
and was a second lieutenant
in the Navy during World
War II.
Mr. Ferber leaves his wife,
Rose; son and daughter-in-
law, Evan Ferber and Lynne'
Stockwell of Olympia, Wash.;
daughter, Lenore of Ann Ar-
bor; three grandchildren.
Adolph Traub "Bud" Silver-
stein, 64, of Bloomfield Hills,
died July 31.
Mr. Silverstein was vice -
president and controller of
Fruehauf Corporation until
he retired in 1988. He was a
member of Temple Beth El,
was in the U.S. Army during
World War II, graduated from
the University of Michigan in
1949 and was a member of
the U-M Presidents Club.
Mr. Silverstein was active
with the Alumni Association
and was a member of the
Michigan Harness Horsemen
Association.
He leaves his wife, Gloria;
daughters and son-in-law,
Karen Hartman of Bend,
Ore., Susan and Steven
Johnson of Wheeling, Ill.
Louis Norris,
Cigar Distributor
Louis Norris, 98, of West
Bloomfield, died Aug. 6.
Mr. Norris was owner and
operator of Metropolitan
Tobacco and Candy Co. for
more than 50 years. He
distributed and was the
original namer of Joe Muer
Cigars and was a distributor
of Cadillac Cigars for Jake
Mazer.
Mr. Norris was one of the
first hikers with the Detroit
Newspaper Hikers Club. He
was active with Hannah
Schloss Oldtimers, Pisgah
Lodge-B'nai B'rith, the
Democratic Party and United
Hebrew Schools.
He leaves his sons, Harold
of West Bloomfield, Norton of
California; daughter, Irene
Simon of Birmingham; seven
grandchildren; four great-
grandchildren.
Carl Rosenfield,
Restaurateur
Carl Rosenfield, 95, of
Bloomfield Hills, died Aug. 3.
Mr. Rosenfield was the
founder and owner of Carl's
Chop House, which has been
in the same location since
1932. Mr. Rosenfield was in
the restaurant business since
1922.
He leaves his grand-
children, Ian Aronsson, Tim
Conklin, Jeffry and Wendy
Aronsson; one great-grand-
son.
Besides Israel, where 85 per
cent of the population is
Jewish, only five countries
have Jewish populations ex-
ceeding one per cent of the
general population. They are
the U.S. (2.5 per cent),
Gibraltar, Uruguay, Canada
and France.
