Lovers of Jewish culture
and art history should con-
sider traveling to Northern
Italy this October with Pro-
fessor Bezalel Narkiss, the
world-renowned director of
the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem's Center for
Jewish Art.
This 10-day symposium,
"Jewish Art in Piemonte,"
will be based in the 18th cen-
tury Royal Palace of Turin,
where lectures will be
presented by international
scholars. By combining lec-
tures with bus tours to nine
of the most important
historical Jewish com-
munities of Piemonte, the
participants will be shown a
picture of Piemontese culture
from Roman times to the
present.
Following their expulsion
from Spain, the Jews who
traveled south and settled in
Northern Italy developed the
unique rituals of AFAM (the
contraction of Asti, Forsano
and Moncalvo) which
originated in Provence.
Although the Jewish com-
munities there were mostly
wiped out by the Nazis, the
few remaining Baroque
synagogues have provided
refuge for some of the original
furniture and ritual objects,
reflecting the glory and beau-
ty of Jewish artistic expres-
sion at that time. The bus
tours will include such places
as Casale Monferrato, Asti,
Alessandria, Vercelli, Beilla,
Saluzzo, Cuneo, Mondovi and
Cherasco.
As guests of Piemonte's
regional government, par-
ticipants will have entry to
synagogues and collections
not usually open to the public.
Receptions with members of
the Italian-Israel Association
and the active Jewish com-
munity of Turin, (including a
communal kosher Shabbat
dinner), will set the stage for
a cultural exchange between
participants and the local
residents.
Accommodation for the ten
nights will be in the Genio
Hotel in Turin, a 15-minute
walk from the Royal Palace.
The symposium will be
limited to 45 participants,
and will be filled on a first
come-first served basis.
Prices for this 10-day sym-
posium are: per person (dou-
ble occupancy), $2,241; one
person (single room), $2,591.
Prices include all of the lec-
tures, hotel accommodations,
two-and-a-half days of bus
tours with two lunches, all en-

trance fees, Shabbat evening
meal, 10 continental
breakfasts, receptions, a final
banquet and a $200 contribu-
tion to the Center for Jewish
Art to cover expenses. It does
not include transportation to
and from Turin, nor travelers'
insurance. An optional kosher
Shabbat lunch will be
available.

Israel, Greece
Promote Tours

New York (JTA) - Greece
and Israel, closely situated
nations which until last year
did not even have full diplo-
matic ties, have made what
could be a precedent-setting
move for the Mediterranean
region by signing an agree-
ment to jointly promote
tourism to the two countries.
Under the accord, signed
on May 21 in Jerusalem by
the two nations' respective
ministers of tourism, Greece
and Israel will work
together in a variety of
tourism-promoting areas.
The agreement comes ex-
actly one year after the two
countries established full
diplomatic relations. The
Greek minister of tourism,
Yannis Kefaloyiannis, said
Tuesday in New York that it
sets "the foundation for a
new era."
Both countries have expe-
rienced drops in tourism as a
result of travelers' fears of
terrorist attack or by simply
being in an area in which
war has been close and
travel feared by many.
Israel and Greece will each
contribute /$1 million for a
joint advertising program to
entice travelers to the two
countries. The campaign
will run in the United
States, Canada, Japan and
South Korea.
This promotional cam-
paign will not be a
substitute for independent
tourism campaigns by the
countries, but will supple-
ment them, said Rafael
Farber, Israel's tourism
commissioner for North
America.
According to the accord,
Greece also will open a
tourism bureau in
Jerusalem and will support
Israel's application for
membership into the Euro-
pean Travel Commission.
