Two Syrian Jews
Are Imprisoned
Two Syrian Jews, brothers
Eli and Selim Swed, have
begun a hunger strike in a
Damascus prison after being
sentenced to 6 1/2 years im-
prisonment. Having been
held without charges since
November 1987, the Sweds •
were tried in secret, on the
reported charges of espionage
and treason, after they had
traveled abroad to visit
relatives they had not seen for
three decades.
