In Santa Fe, her parents
helped found one of the city's
first Reform temples. In-
deed, Ms. Weiner was the
first girl to achieve bat mitz-
vah in her city. All through
her growing up years, she
had a deep interest and fas-
cination for the art and in-
tellectualism of southwest
culture, particularly the
American Indian.
She said that growing up
in the Southwest gave her
an opportunity to learn
about different cultures and
to personally take in a world
view that she might have
missed in the so-called big
city.
"It's hard for me to say
no," she said. "There are so
many projects that appeal to
me. It's been difficult to
become narrowly focused."
In Santa Fe, she said eth-
nic diversity was encourag-
ed, so being a Jew in the
Southwest was for her, a
wonderful experience.
Here in Detroit, where she
is the wife of Dr. Gershon

to say no. So

Jeannie Weiner
Weiner, Ms. Weiner works
as a consultant for an educa-
tional toy store in Rochester.
But her real "job" is the
hours she spends volunteer-
ing. Because since she arriv-
ed in Detroit, she's done just
about everything one person
can do.
"She has been active in
many Jewish organizations
and has been a leader of
those organizations," said
Council executive director
David Gad-Harf. "She's a
grassroots type of president,
very sensitive to the needs
and concerns of the various
Jewish organizations.
"She also has been in-
volved in inter-group and
interfaith relations," he con-
tinued. "I'm sure she'll br-
ing these strengths to bear
here. Those topics will be
priorities for her."
Ms. Weiner called herself
an activist by orientation.
She said that she hopes to
"infect" her board with that
spirit of activism."
Concerning her work in
Arab-Jewish relations lo-
cally, Ms. Weiner said
there's a real need to im-
prove these contacts bet-
ween the two groups. She
said there's been past suc-
cesses in getting the two
groups together in the recent
past, but those successes
need to continue. ❑
