NAME: Andrew Loren Gutman

AGE: 22

OCCUPATION: A student at
Michigan State University
graduating in accounting in
July.

EDUCATION: He is a graduate
of Southfield-Lathrup High
School.

FAMILY: He is the son of
Sharon Gutman, of West
Bloomfield, who is the
manager at Century 21
Suburban, and Mark
Gutman, of Livonia, the
director of long-range
planning in Garden City
Public Schools. His brother,
Ken Gutman, is a substitute
teacher and working on a
graduate degree from Wayne
State University. His grand-
parents, Albert and Betty
Gutman, reside in West
Bloomfield, and grandfather
Morton Surowitz resides in
Southfield.

RESIDENCE: Livonia
ORGANIZATIONS: He is active

in student government and
other student groups at
Michigan State University,
including the campus
Republicans.

FAVORITE BOOK: The Prophet
by Kahlil Gibran.

HOBBIES: "I'm an armchair
sports player, especially
boxing!'

LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: He
recently received the Chuck
Kaplan Award, which is
awarded to an MSU senior
serving on student class
council. In 1990 he was

named Spartan of the Year for
school spirit and dedication.

PHILOSOPHY: "It varies day to
day." He agrees with
American author James
Albert Pike: "What we have
done for ourselves alone dies
with us. What we have done
for others remains and is
immortal."

BACKGROUND: Andrew Gut-
man grew up in Oak Park and
Southfield. His bar mitzvah
was at Temple Israel and he
attended Camp Tamarack. "I
had an average childhood," he
said.
While attending Southfield-
Lathrup High School, he was
active in student government.
All during high school he
worked. He started with a
paper route and then held
jobs at the library and a
yogurt store. For the last five
summers he was a
playground supervisor at
Knollwood Country Club.
His parents divorced during
his teen years. He lived with
his mother until he was 18.
When he is not in East
Lansing, he resides with his
father in Livonia.
After he enrolled at MSU,
he emulated his brother who
was active in dormitory life.
"I saw what my brother had
accomplished and it gave me
dedication to try and prove
myself!"
He assumed leadership
positions in his residence
hall. He eventually won the
Rich McDonald Leadership
Award for his devotion to
Phillips Snyder Hall on
campus. "If you have
organizational involvement
at MSU, it not only helps you
grow, but helps your
experience here. It teaches
you quite a bit. I gained a lot
of self-confidence here."
