BACKGROUND: Andrew Gut- man grew up in Oak Park and Southfield. His bar mitzvah was at Temple Israel and he attended Camp Tamarack. "I had an average childhood," he said. While attending Southfield- Lathrup High School, he was active in student government. All during high school he worked. He started with a paper route and then held jobs at the library and a yogurt store. For the last five summers he was a playground supervisor at Knollwood Country Club. His parents divorced during his teen years. He lived with his mother until he was 18. When he is not in East Lansing, he resides with his father in Livonia. After he enrolled at MSU, he emulated his brother who was active in dormitory life. "I saw what my brother had accomplished and it gave me dedication to try and prove myself!" He assumed leadership positions in his residence hall. He eventually won the Rich McDonald Leadership Award for his devotion to Phillips Snyder Hall on campus. "If you have organizational involvement at MSU, it not only helps you grow, but helps your experience here. It teaches you quite a bit.
