"Send A Kid To Camp"
Thanks. . . .
On behalf of the children, the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit would like to thank all of those individuals
who so generously contributed to our "Send a Kid to Camp"
program. For many of these deserving youngsters, attending
camp is their only contact with the Jewish Community. It's not
too late. Join others who already know the joy of helping a child,
and add your name to the list.**
> Israel Reacts
To Control
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
is reacting cautiously to
President Bush's new in-
itiative for arms control in
the Middle East.
The tone was set by Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir,
who told visiting British
Conservative Party mem-
bers that Israel welcomes
the president's call for curbs
and international supervi-
sion on weapons of mass
destruction, but has "some
questions" about it.
Defense Minister Moshe
Arens, talking to reporters
after a meeting with visiting
U.S. Defense Secretary Dick
Cheney, said Israel would
"study very closely" the
details of the initiative and
would "continue to discuss
it" with the United States.
On the one hand, officials
are privately buoyed by the
interpretation of the plan
voiced in Washington — that
it would mean effectively
enshrining Israel as the only
nuclear power in the region,
by forbidding any other
country from acquiring or
producing nuclear materiel.
Israel, after all, is believed
to be the only Middle East-
ern nation that now has a
nuclear capacity.
On the other hand, the
president's call for curbs on
all future nuclear arms pro-
duction, coupled with his
call for a ban on missile sup-
plies into the region and the
eventual destruction of mis-
sile stockpiles, worry Israeli
policy-makers, who base the
Jewish state's "last resort"
strength precisely on these
two strategic components.

U.S. To Store
Arms In Israel
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Both
Israeli and American offi-
cials have expressed satis-
faction with U.S. Defense
Secretary Dick Cheney's
two-day visit here which
ended with an announce-
ment that United States will
store some $200 million of
American weapons in Israel.
Other areas of military co-
operation announced during
Mr. Cheney's trip include
U.S. decisions to finance 72
percent of the second-stage
development costs of the
Arrow anti-missile missile
and to provide Israel with
another 10 F-15 jet fighters.
Some $100 million of
weapons and ammunition,
approved some years ago, is
now being delivered to Israel
for what is called "preposi-
tioning."
