PINCHED NERVE IN THE NECK
Reform Group Urges
Sensitivity To Gays
The Religious Action
center of Reform Judaism
has stepped up efforts to sen-
sitize the Jewish community
to the special problems of
gay and lesbian Jews.
Recently, the Washington-
based group, a division of the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, sent out a
"rabbis packet," designed to
help rabbis in Reform con-
gregations educate their
members.
"We're asking congrega-
tions to really do something
to make a public statement
on the issue," said Rabbi
Sharon Kleinbaum, the
RAC's congregational rela-
tions director. "We want
them to follow through on
resolutions that have al-
ready been passed."
Rabbis are being asked to
give sermons that deal with
Jewish texts and the issue of
homosexuality, and to invite
speakers to visit their con-
gregations — including gay
and lesbian Jews and their
families.
The Reform movement,
Rabbi Kleinbaum said, has
taken the lead in the Jewish
community in passing
resolutions welcoming gay
and lesbian Jews into the
Jewish community and all
its institutions.
But those resolutions are
not so easily translated into
reality.
"There has been some
resistance," Rabbi Klein-
baum said. "This issue real-
ly reaches to peoples' fears
about the changing nature of
the Jewish community.
Many rabbis are scared of
the issue. In many cases, the
congregations are out in
front of the rabbis."
Israel Angers
Merchant Marine
As if Israel didn't have
enough tsuris on Capitol
Hill.
Now the Jewish state has
aroused the ire of the Ameri-
can Maritime Congress, a
group representing U.S.
shipping interests.
The group is circulating a
newsletter on Capitol Hill
with a provocative headline:
"Biting the Hand that Feeds
It: Once More, Israeli
Government Torpedoes
U.S.-Flag Fleet."
The issue has to do with
Israel's avoidance of U.S.
cargo reservation laws
designed to protect the en-
dangered American mer-
chant fleet.
Israel, facing the enor-
mous burden of providing
housing for hundreds of
thousands of Soviet Jews,
has received a partial waiver
of the requirement that
"knockdown" housing pur-
chased through the Export-
Import Bank financing be
shipped on U.S. carriers.
The merchant marine
group is unhappy. Israel,
they argue, should offer
some offsetting benefit to the
American merchant marine.
But "shipping American"
could cost the Israelis mill-
ions of extra dollars in the
next few years, when Ameri-
can-built housing will play
an important role in that
country's effort to cope with
the exodus of Soviet Jews. ❑

British Lawmakers Pass
War Crimes Legislation
London (JTA) — The
House of Commons has in-
voked the Parliament Act
for the first time in 42 years,
to overrule the latest at-
tempt by the House of Lords
to block legislation that
would allow British courts to
try suspects of Nazi war
crimes living in Britain.
The Parliament Act has
not been used since 1949. It
became necessary after the
peers voted April 30, for the
second time in less than a
year, to reject the war crimes
bill, which the House of
Commons had passed over-
whelmingly, for the second
time, on March 20.
The bill has been sent to
the queen for royal assent, a
formality that was expected
to be carried out Thursday.
Once that happens,
Scotland Yard will send a
special nine- member unit
into action to investigate
alleged war criminals living
in Britain.
Few disorders of the spine rival the frequency of low back pain. One
such disorder, however, is neck pain.
Neck pain is often accompanied by numbness or tingling in one or both
arms. While many people attribute these sensations to "circulation," they
most often result from pinching or irritation of a spinal nerve.
Several causes of numbness and tingling to the arms originate in the
neck. Perhaps the most common is restriction of the movement of a spinal
joint. This may cause direct friction to the nerve root as it exits the spine,

or secondary muscle tightness which can also produce nerve friction.
Factors such as degeneration or thinning of the spinal discs narrow the nerve openings
in the spine and make the nerve more susceptible to friction.
Dr. J.K. Paterson, a medical doctor, performed a large study on patients with spinal pain
syndromes. Of the 364 patients complete relief of symptoms was obtained in 90% of the pa-
tients with neck disorders using chiropractic manipulation.
Numbness or tingling to one or both arms is usually the result of a pinched or irritated
nerve in the neck. Examination will reveal the cause and rule out "poor circulation."
Our office takes great pride in providing the best care available for those with pinched
nerves and associated pain.
