"Tents of Jacob," a sculpture
created especially for Temple
Beth El by artist Yaacov
Agam, will be formally
dedicated 6 p.m. June 2 at the
temple. In attendance will be
the artist and the donors of
the work, Mr. and Mrs. Irving
Seligman. The sculpture,
which stands outside the en-
trance to the Helen L. DeRoy
Sanctuary was given to the
temple in honor of the bat
mitzvah of the Seligmans'
granddaughter, Rachel.
The dedication ceremonies
will be followed by a wine and
cheese preview of the more
than 100 works to be auction-
ed. Included are paintings,
sculptures, • tapestries,
multiples, Agamographs and
serigraphs. Yaacov Agam will
be available during the
preview to discuss individual
pieces and answer questions.
He will speak at 7:30 p.m.
The auction will begin at 7:45
p.m. Proceeds from the sale
will benefit the projects of the
Temple Beth El Brotherhood.

Tours Art Exhibit

Dr. Jan van der Marck,
chief curator and curator of
20th century art at the
Detroit Institute of Arts, will
guide Israel Bond Golda Meir
Club members through an ex-
hibition of selected art by
Israeli artists June 20.
For this tour of "Art in
Israel Today," followed by lun-
cheon in the DLA's Crystal
Gallery, buses will leave the
Manufacturers Southfield
Tower, 29201 Telegraph Road
at 10:15 a.m. Serving as co-
chairmen of the Golda Meir
Club event are Linda Hay-
man and Rochelle Lieber-
man.
The exhibition will feature
nine Israeli artists: Moshe
Gershuni, Menache
Kadishman, Moshe Kupfer-
man, Michael Gitlin, Zvi
Goldstein, Nahum Tevet,
Dganit Berest, Gabi Klasmer
and Joshua Borkovsky. Spon-
sored by the American-Israel
Education Institute and the
DIA's Friends of Modern Art,
the DIA will show this exhibi-
tion through Aug. 18.
Dr. van der Marck, a native
of the Netherlands, has held
top-level positions in
curatorial work and museum
administration, including
that of curator of the
Municipal Museum in Ar-

nhem, Netherlands, and the
Walker Art Center in Min-
neapolis; and director of the
Museum of Contemporary
Art in Chicago, Museum and
Galleries of Dartmouth Col-
lege and Center for the Fine
Arts in Miami.

Tanner Exhibit
Set At DIA

The Detroit Institute of
Arts will host the exhibi-
tion "Henry Ossawa Tanner"
through Aug. 4.
This is the first major ex-
hibition in two decades de-
voted to Mr. Tanner (1859-
1937), who is recognized to-
day as the foremost African-
American artist at the turn of
the century. More than 90
paintings and some 20 draw-
ings have been selected from
public and private collections
throughout the United States
to span Mr. Tanner's career of
more than 50 years.
In Detroit the exhibition is
made possible by additional
funding from Ford Motor
Company, the state of Michi-
gan, the city of Detroit and
the Founders Society.
