Able Nathan
Hunger Strike
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Abie
Nathan's doctor warned him
on the 15th day of his
"hunger strike for peace"
that he is endangering his
life.
The 60-year-old peace ac-
tivist also heard pleas from
political sympathizers and
foes alike to end the fast he
began more than two weeks
ago. But he is persisting.
Mr. Nathan is protesting
the law that forbids Israelis
to have contacts with repre-
sentatives of the Palestine
Liberation Organization.
Paid newspaper adver-
tisements last week an-
nounced, "Today is the 15th
day of Abie Nathan's indefi-
nite fast for peace in protest
against the law that, in
effect, prohibits talking
peace with the Palestinian
leadership."
Mr. Nathan served time in
prison last year for disobey-
ing the law and faces
charges for subsequent
violations. His argument is
that talking to the enemy is
the only road to peace.
But Shimon Peres, leader
of the opposition Labor Par-
ty, visited Mr. Nathan in his
hotel room to beg him to end
his fast and urged Nathan to
stop serving as a "propagan-
da instrument" of the PLO.
Mr. Peres said that while
he sympathized with Mr.
Nathan's objectives, he
should not break the law,
however much he disap-
proves of it.
