Ariana Gallery
Chair Paintings
Xochipilli Gallery in Birm-
ingham is hosting an exhibit
of recent paintings and draw-
ings, by Michigan artist Mag-
gie Citrin.
Ms. Citrin was born in
Detroit and has lived in the
Detroit-Ann Arbor area
throughout her life. The pain-
tings created in the past few
years and featured in this ex-
hibit involve imagery from
the artist's travels in the
Himalaya Mountains, the
Sahara and Patagonia.
In this new exhibit the
mountains of Patagonia and
of the Sahara dominate the
imagery. The works are com-
binations of acrylics, oil
crayon and pastel on canvas
and paper. Ms. Citrin's cur-
rent graduate work in En-
vironmental Education at the
School of Natural Resources
at University of Michigan
complements her painting in
her studio. During her most
recent four-month visit to
Chile, Ms. Citrin completed
four new paintings for this
exhibit.
The exhibit will run
through June 8. The gallery
hours are Tuesday through
Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
For information, call Mary
Wright, 645-1905.
Suzanne Velick's paintings,
drawings and constructions
are on display at Ariana
Gallery.
For Ms. Velick, the arrange-
ment of objects in our en-
vironment is an art and art is
a form of communication. The
furniture we sit on or the
decor we employ can be class-
ed as art since it com-
municates some aspect of our
personalities.
Ms. Velick has drawn in-
spiration from familiar ob-
jects in the environment —
"the seating arrangement."
Ariana Gallery is at 386 E.
Maple, Birmingham.

her past. Louis Jaquet creates
his own oil paint by mixing in
organic pigments and natural
elements. Zhiwei Tu traveled
through rural China and
Tibet and tried to capture the
