Paintings & Drawings
Park West Gallery
Chinese Art
The colorful paintings,
sculptures and serigraph
works of Jiang Tiefeng will be
on exhibit starting May 17 at
Park West Gallery. Jiang
Tiefeng will be at the opening
and in the gallery on May 18.
Jiang Tiefeng is the founder
and leading proponent of the
"Yunnan School," recognized
as the first new Chinese art
movement in 700 years.
In Yunnan, a remote pro-
vince, Jiang formed a group
who would meet in secret at
night to discuss their theories
and paint in makeshift
studios. They drew from geo-
graphical, ethnic and ancient
aspects of Chinese life. Unlike
their traditional origins of
light wash and ink paintings
of Chinese landscapes and
florals, they used vibrant
colors and powerful composi-
tions inspired by ancient
Dunhuang cave paintings.
Jiang immigrated to the
U.S. as part of a cultural ex-
change program in 1983
when China was opening its
doors to the West. He now
lives and works in southern
California and has gained
great international accep-
tance as a fine artist.
Park West Gallery is
located at 29469 Northwest-
ern Highway, just north of 12
Mile Road, in Southfield.
Gallery hours are Monday-
Wednesday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.;

9 p.m. and Saturday and Sun-

mation, call 354-2343.
