Gail Dubinbaum of
Phoenix, Ariz., will play the
role of Suzuki. She attracted
national attention by winn-
ing the Metropolitan Opera
audition in 1981. She has
gone on to perfom with many
prestigious opera companies
and orchestras including
Metropolitan Opera, Vienna
State Opera, Los Angeles
Philharmonic, Boston Sym-
phony Orchestra and Pitt-
sburgh Symphony.
Ms. Dubinbaum studied
voice at the University of
Arizona, but she admits to
informal studying all her life
with her musical family. "I
came out singing," she said.
Her mother, Ruth Dubin-
baum, is a voice teacher in
Phoenix. She is the voice
teacher of the cantor at
Temple Beth El in Phoenix.
"I feel I'm privileged to be
on stage and part of music,"
said Ms. Dubinbaum. About
her role in Madame Butterfly
she adds, "I don't play it as a
secondary character. I play
it as a supporting role."
For more information
about performances, call the
Michigan Opera Theatre at
