CATERING HOT LINE
CATERING
AT IT'S FINEST
e is noted for attempt-
ing different concepts
. . . even though the
one he already has is suc-
cessful . . . Some have been
known to backfire on him .. .
like the latest effort of chang-
ing a proven operation to a
jazz club and restaurant.
Dimitri Syros even altered
the name from Dimitri's of
Southfield on Southfield
north of 10 Mile to Dimitri's
Jazz Supper Club . . . a ven-
ture that didn't pan out as he
expected. _
Worse was that so many
people thought he didn't own
the place anymore.
You wouldn't think a good,
respected restaurateur with
30 years' experience would
tamper with the measure of
success he has achieved.
Some say Dimitri Syros
"has ants in his pants" . . . He
likes challenges . . . too many
times at the expense of
perhaps hurting himself.
But it seems like Dimitri
has gotten wiser . . . and may
be ready to stay on the right
track . . . at least it is hoped
by many.
This June will be the se-
cond anniversary of Dimitri's
of Southfield . . . the name he
has reverted back to . . . as a
full-fledged restaurant .. .
and no more messing around
with something he doesn't
know.
A lot of folks are hoping
Dimitri doesn't start
challenging himself again .. .
They know his knowledge of
food is high . . . and after all,
it's what he knows best that
has created successful
endeavors throughout the
years.
Seating at Dimitri's of
Southfield is 275 plus a
lounge for 30 and private ban-
quet room that holds another
120.
Absentee ownership is a
known killer of many
restaurant businesses . . .
Dimitri knows better than to
let this also ruin him . . . As
a host and kitchen overseer,
they don't come too much
finer than Dimitri Syros.
So don't start searching for
other challenges, "Jimmy"
. . . You've got a big one right
here . . . getting Dimitri's of
Southfield on the right road
again . . . Look at it as your
new grand opening.
INTERIOR DESIGNER
Ron Lowy and his date, plus
the other "Mail Order Men"
from last month's singles seg-
ment of "Kelly and Com-
pany" are scheduled to re-
appear this Monday, 9 a.m. to
10 a.m. on the popular
WXYZ-TV Channel 7 show
and tell how things went .. .
"And we're going to have a
new twist," says Producer
Lorie Weiss. "We're going to
open up the phone lines dur-
ing the show for possible
future dates for our men and
even some on-air video dating
as well."
CONGRATS . . . to Sam
and Helene Klein, former
localites now living in Delray
Beach, Fla. . . . on their 50th
anniversary . . . Recent visit
here was to attend wedding of
cousin Randy Smith to Pam
Reisman . . . and celebrate at
dinner with children Ronald
and Lynne Klein, Eileen and
Bob Gunsberg and Dennis
and Robin Klein.
TO MANY, it's difficult to
find . . . but only the first time
. . . New Mandarin Garden,
on 13 Mile Road west of Or-
chard Lake Road, is hidden
behind the Buggy Works
Restaurant that faces onto
Orchard Lake Road . . . and
has depended on its food and
service to make certain
customers find the place.
This is New Mandarin
Garden's ninth anniversary
. . . opened by the late Mike
Che . . . and continued on by
his family, Jerry, Gary and
Susan . . . all taught the
restaurant business by Mike
. . . Dad showed Jerry how to
cook . . . Gary is in the kit-
chen three times a week and
host the other days . . . All
three take over if necessary
when waiters or busboys fail
to show up for work.
It's been almost two years
since Mike has been gone .. .
He and wife Nana went to
Taiwan . . . When they
returned, Mike was tired and
jet-lagged . . . plus it was
Chinese New Year . . . He left
the restaurant to go to
Midland and celebrate with
his parents . . . It was on 1-696
that Mike's car turned over
after being involved in an
accident.
He always ran a good opera-
tion . . . and his children are
continuing where tragedy
forced him to leave off .. .
Jerry has been at New Man-
darin Garden since 12 years
old, working as a busboy and
washing dishes . . . He began
cooking at age 15, learning
Mike's ways with Peking,
Szechuan, Mandarin and
Korean styles . . . Jerry is
now 21.
Redecorating at New Man-
darin Garden six months ago
included a complete new
outer face of the restaurant
. . . People like to watch the
exotic fish in two large
aquariums that have been
added.
Prime reason why it has so
many Asian customers, many
Japanese, is because of the
large noodle dish variety .
It is a favorite among this sec-
tor of people.
New Mandarin Garden
seats 140 in two rooms .. .
and it's nice to see the Mike
Che family tradition being
carried on.
WIDELY-NOTED psychic,
Char, in town from Los
Angeles for "Dayna" TV show
this morning, 10 a.m. over
WJBK-TV Channel 2,
Dimitri's Jazz
Supper Club has
reverted back to
Dimitri's of
Southfield, ending
an experiment that
left customers
thinking the
ownership had
changed.
wouldn't think of not spen-
ding Mother's Day with her
mom this Sunday . . . no way.
It's the big reason why
Char is staying over in the
local area . . . to be with
mother Ida Margolis . . . and
sisters Elaine Lippitt and
Alicia Tisdale.
Char's appearance on the
"Dayna" show is to com-
municate with the spirits in
giving readings for people in
the audience and those call-
ing in . . . assisting in guiding
them with their lives.
Char works with various
police departments in outly-
ing areas of Los Angeles,
helping to solve homicide and
other crimes . . . plus aiding
in finding missing persons or
corroborating the findings of
police in the case.
Her readings for celebrities
and personalities are also of
large note.
GARY COCHRAN and
dad Jack Cochran of Beau
Jacks, Maple and Telegraph,
are honorary co-chairmen of
this year's ninth annual golf
tournament by Michigan
B'nai B'rith, June 17, at
Wabeek Country Club . . .
