From Refusenik To
Conservative Leader

IRA RIFKIN

Special to The Jewish News

T

he tens of thousands of
Soviet Jews im-
migrating to Israel
are, for most part, Jews by
birth alone. Their knowl-
edge of the faith and culture
has been sharply limited by
70 years of Soviet repres-
sion.
However, a vanguard of
Soviet Jewish immigrants has
been exposed to Jewish
knowledge. In nearly all
such instances, Orthodox
sources provided the infor-
mation.
Yosef Begun — the former
refusenik who spent 10 years
in Soviet prisons, labor
camps and in internal exile
— is one such example.
"In Russia, the little
Judaism I found was Or-
thodox and it emphasized
ritual and was very regi-
mented," said Mr. Begun,
his English laced with a
thick Russian accent.
In 1988 — after 17 years of
effort — Mr. Begun was
finally allowed by Moscow to
immigrate to Israel. Once in
the Jewish State, he immed-
iately began exploring the
varieties of Jewish expres-
sion that thrive there. He
studied with Orthodox
groups and checked out
Israel's fledgling Reform
camp.
But he found himself most
comfortable in the Conser-
vative movement, known in
Israel as Mesorati, or Tradi-
tional Judaism.
"I liked the (Conservative)
approach to Judaism as a
great culture, as a system of
philosophical and spiritual
thought that contains all the
vital ideas," said Mr. Begun
in an interview during a
North American tour to help
generate funds for Conser-
vative outreach efforts
among Soviet immigrants.
"It is pluralistic and very in-
tellectual. That is how Rus-
sian Jews are also. We are
very fond of modern cul-
ture."
Mr. Begun said he believes
large- numbers of Soviet
Jews will also embrace Con-
servative Judaism once they
are exposed to the movement
that stands between Or-
thodoxy and Reform in its
adherence to tradition and
acceptance of modernity.
If he is correct, then Con-

Ira Rifkin is assistant editor of
the Baltimore Jewish Times.

Yosef Begun:
Comfort in Conservatism.

servative Judaism — the
only branch of religious
Judaism that has been con-
sistently -Zionistic from its
inception —might finally
make a broad impact on
Israel.
So far, only about 40
Mesorati congregations have
been established in Israel,
with some 15-300 members
each. The majority of mem-
bers are immigrants from
the United States and other
English-speaking nations.
"Russian Jews, please
understand, need to grow
from exodus into freedom,"
said Mr. Begun. "To do that,
they need a notion of tradi-
tion, of Sinai. They need a
love of culture and a feeling
that they are part of a larger
destiny. Mesorati offers all
this.
Mr. Begun was accom-
panied on his fund-raising
tour by his spiritual mentor
— Rabbi Harvey W.
Meirovich of the Conser-
vative Jewish Theological
Seminary's Jerusalem bran-
ch.
Rabbi Meirovich, a Cana-
dian who made aliyah two
years ago, said the goal of
Conservative outreach is,
first and foremost, to instill
in Soviet Jews enough
Zionist sentiment so that
they will want to remain in
Israel.
"They come to Israel only
because that is where the
airplane lands," he said.
"They will bolt at the first
opportunity for the U.S. and
other western nations unless
they gain a sense of belong-
ing. They come as tabula
rasa (clean slates), but
thirsting for an identity."
Israeli-style Conservative
Judaism, according to Rabbi
