move out of the Butzel
building," Mr. Gad-Harf
said. "It's likely our
Southfield office, (which is
currently housed at the
Agency for Jewish Edu-
cation) would move to the
Federation's new building.
It's hard to imagine not be-
ing connected to the Federa-
tion, but I'm not yet
prepared to say whether or
not the bulk of our offices
would follow.
"We're very serious about
maintaining a strong
presence in the city," Mr.
Gad-Harf explained. "We
not only represent the Jew-
ish community, we also need
to keep ties with city offi-
cials and other news media."
Mr. Schlussel said that
even if the Federation moves
to Bloomfield Township, the
Federation will also main-
tain offices in the city.
"We'll have to look for an-
other downtown location,
but we definitely feel a
responsibility to maintain a
distinctive Jewish presence
in Detroit, which is the
economic hub and cultural
center of our city."
Mr. Schlussel said the
Butzel Building was just too
expensive to continue
operating. In addition, he
said 85-90 percent of all staff
meetings are held in the
suburbs.
"Bloomfield Township is
equidistant to Southfield,
Oak Park and West Bloom-
field," he said. "In choosing
this location, we feel we're
equally accessible to all
segments of the Jewish
community."
Two other sites were con-
sidered, he said. One was a
plan to purchase 51/2 acres of
land on 13 Mile Road east of
Northwestern in Farm-
ington Hills. The second in-
volved a six-month option on
a site at the southwest
corner of 13 Mile Road and
Northwestern.
Both proposals were nixed
after Federation officers
decided they weren't viable
and the Southfield City
Council and the Southfield
School Board sent letters
asking the Federation to
reconsider their city.
Larry Jackier, chairman of
the Federation's campaign,
sees the Oakland Hills
building as a positive devel-
opment.
"Moving closer to the
heart of the Jewish commun-
ity, the Federation will be
better able to access more
lay leadership," Mr. Jackier
said. "We can anticipate a
greater degree of community
participation because of the
close proximity of the new
location." ❑
