Arabs Featured
In Vanity Fair

What is Vanity Fair com-
ing to?
Two lengthy, serious ar-
ticles in the current issue on
Saudi Arabia's King Fand
and the byzantine,
murderous inner-world of
the Palestinian leadership
make this hyper-glossy,
often frothy magazine ap-
pear as if it is trying to
become a popular version of
Foreign Affairs.
Writer Peter Theroux's
profile of King Fand has
some of the edge usually
found in Vanity Fair's
celebrity profiles. The king,
writes Mr. Theroux, "was
born to be the prince of
Monaco. He loves the
prerogatives of his job, and
seems in almost every way
to be wrong for it." And the
king's brothers, who are in
line to succeed him, "have a
reputation for drugs and
shoplifting . . ."
T.D. Allman's 5,000-word
exegesis on the murder in
January of Abu Iyad, the
PLO's second-in-command,
charts the murky waters of
the Palestinian high com-
mand. Abu Iyad master-
minded the attack on Israeli
athletes at the 1972 Munich
Olympics. Recently, he had
been a force for PLO
moderation.
Among the suspects Mr.
Allman rejects in the Abu
Iyad slaying:
• The Mossad, Israel's in-
telligence agency, which "a
number" of U.S. and Euro-
pean intelligence officers say
is determined to wipe out
PLO moderates, thus forcing
the PLO to self-destruct by
returning to radicalism.
But Mossad agents, says
Mr. Allman, "are control
freaks." An Abu Iyad killer
they had recruited could
have taken his money from
the Israelis, then held a
press conference revealing
how the agency had tried to
kill "one of the PLO leaders
most associated with the
effort to make peace with
Israel."
• Saddam Hussein, who,
by killing Abu Iyad, could
have helped turn the PLO
back to terrorism and then
unleash "a perfect in-
strument" for terror
throughout the world after
the allies struck Iraq. But,
says Mr. Allman, the PLO's
entire senior leadership also
opposed resuming terror.
The most likely killer, says
Mr. Allman, was terrorist
Abu Nidal, who has rejected
the PLO's new anti-terror
stance. Abu Nidal was out for
revenge.
