more frills than in the days of the Old
West. Usually, dude ranches are work-
ing ranches, and they "offer you the
ability to rub elbows with authentic
American cowboys," says Dave Wig-
gins, president of American
Wilderness Experience. AWE offers
ranches in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho,
Montana and Wyoming.
Some ranches offer white water
rafting, overnight camping trips and
sightseeing. Many offer children's pro-
grams; there are ranches designed for
singles, families, and adults-only. A full

Next winter, you can head to the
snow-covered mountains of British
Columbia, in Western Canada, for
spectacular powder skiing. Selkirk
Tangiers Helicopter Skiing offers hell-
skiing in remote areas of Revelstoke,
B.C., a five-hour drive from Calgary,
Alberta. Every day of your trip, you
will be picked up near your hotel at
8:30 a.m., and helicoptered to the
day's skiing area.
"Our area covers 3,000 square
kilometers of skiable terrain with over
200 major runs," says Susan
Nemecek. "The area is limited only
by the range of the helicopter and the
skiers' abilities:
Groups of 11, plus a guide, are
helicoptered to the top of the moun-
tain or run, which range from 2,600
to 7,200 feet. The helicopter picks you
up at the bottom. A typical day will
feature three to four runs, often in dif-
ferent spots. Skiers are advised to be
in good physical shape, and to be at
the intermediate or advanced level.
Selkirk Tangiers offers three, five
and seven-day packages, and they are
all-inclusive. Accommodations are at
the new Best Western Wayside Inn.
The seven-day trip is $3,360, Cana-
dian, per person. For reservations or
