you're in the middle of

On these safaris every-
thing is catered to your
specific needs. There
are usually 18 to 20
people on a safari, and
you stay in lodges or
safari camps, where the
tents are 14-feet long
and 10-feet wide. 11-ans-
portation is chiefly via
vans or jeeps, though
sometimes destinations
are reached by chart-
ered planes. All meals
are included, and are
prepared in camp. Mr.
Pinto is more than hap-
py to have kids on the
safari, starting about 8
to 10 years old through
teen-agers.
A typical 15-day de-
luxe "Hemingway"
Safari visits Nairobi,
Amboseli, Mountain
Lodge Treetop Hotel,
Sambura/Shaba, Mt.
Kenya Safari Club and
Masai Mara, and runs
about $4,500 per per-
son. For information,
call 1-800-642-2861.
Tom Lithgow's Camp-
fire Safaris are into what
he calls "luxury tent-
ing." Mr. Lithgow, a Ken-
yan, is concerned about
not disturbing the

natural ecosystem, and
thus prefers to avoid
areas other tours go. He
personally guides every
tour himself, and he has
quite a legacy: his
father led safaris for,
among others, Clark
Gable and Ava Gardner.
Mr. Lithgow takes
groups of two to 10 for
a minimum of 10 days.
He works with you
through your travel
agent to develop a per-
sonal itinerary in Kenya
and Tanzania. A typical
safari consists of three
stops for at least three
nights each. Your trans-
portation is by specially-
equipped Toyota 4-
wheel drive Land
Cruiser. In camp, you
sleep in a large tent
with a shower and
lavatory.
For four people or
less, a 10-day safari will
run approximately
$5,200 per person; eight
people will run approx-
imately $4,700 per per-
son. Reservations are
strictly through travel
agents; a brochure can
be obtained by calling
(415) 362-5669.
