Israelis Establish
Sabra Hadassah

S
uzy Abileah was
educated at Hadassah
Hospital and her
daughter, Orit, was born
there.
Since coming in 1987 to
Detroit, Mrs. Abileah has
increased her ties to the
medical organization. This
year, she joined the new
Sabra chapter of Hadassah,
the first Hadassah chapter of
Israelis in the Midwest and
the second in the country.
The first all-Israeli
Hadassah chapter was
started in New York.
The idea for the Sabra
chapter began last year,
when the local Hadassah
hosted Bracha
Rachmilewitz, research di-
rector of the Department of
Experimental Medicine and
Cancer Research at
Hadassah in Jerusalem.
Among those who met Mrs.
Rachmilewitz was Monica
Yaniv, a former Be'er Sheva
resident who came in 1984 to
Detroit.
"She was looking at me
and there was some special
kind of contact," said Mrs.
Yaniv, a Hebrew teacher at
Akiva Hebrew Day School.
The impending Gulf war last
summer further convinced
Mrs. Yaniv that Israeli wo-
men here should "do some-
thing to help."
Recruiting for the group
was by word of mouth. Adina
Laks, formerly of Petach
Tikvah, helped organize the
local Sabra chapter. Eigh-
teen of the 20 women invited
came to the first meeting,
held last August.
"Then they brought their
friends to the second
meeting," Mrs. Laks said.
"That's the way we're hop-
ing to grow by the hun-
dreds."
Last week at Hadassah
House, the group signed its
charter. Standing under a
painting of Hadassah
founder Henrietta Szold,
Hadassah national board
member Annette Meskin
reminded the audience of the
time when women were
rarely seen outside their
kitchens.
"I came here because of my
feeling for Hadassah," said
Mrs. Abileah, who attended
the medical facility's phar-
macy school. "It was the first
hospital in Israel where you
could have private medical
care without paying a for-
tune." E
