recipes and knowledge
been left to gather dust on

Aldo Ottoviani, now
70-years-old, has come out of
his 2Y2-year retirement .. .
after turning down offers
galore . . . and is the new ex-
ecutive chef at Andiamo, 14
Mile between Mount and Van
Dyke.
This is not far . . . especial-
ly when you consider that so
many Jewish people years
back used to flock from
everywhere to his Aldo's
Restaurant on Seven Mile
and Kelly . . . And without
the present day use of a
thoroughfare like 1-696 .. .
which enables folks to go to
Andiamo in minutes .. .
The former Aldo's was on
Kelly and Seven about 40
years . . . starting out as a
pizzeria and becoming a fine
dining spot.
When Andiamo owner Joe
Vicari asked a mutual friend
if Aldo would come to help
him, the noted restaurateur
had become tired from sitting
around doing nothing and
was looking for someone to
pass on his recipes and
knowledge of food . . . They
met, and Aldo knew he had
found that someone.
Aldo has since taken Joe
under his wing with guidance
and know-how of true Italian
cuisine.
It turned out to be more
than just a "helping hand"
. . . Aldo is at Andiamo six
days a week . . . as the highly-
respected executive chef so
many people know and love.
Andiamo's new menu
reflects Aldo with many of the
dishes named in honor of him.
The 160-seater Andiamo is
a free-standing building open-
ed a year-and-a-half ago by
Joe Vicari, also owner of the
popular Lido-On-The-Lake
. . . Andiamo has become an
east side favorite taking over
the reputation gained by
Aldo's.
A player grand piano plays
softly in the background as
folks dine amid the soothing
decor highlighted by etched
glass dividers with teal
lighting.
"It's a blessing, Joe," said
Aldo's wife, Joanne. "He was
getting 'antsy' with
boredom."
Aldo Ottaviani being at An-
diamo is a fine tribute to one
of the top restaurateurs of
yesteryears.
