Choices in the World of Vocal

Butch Thompson Trio will
appear 8 p.m. April 20 at
Rackham Auditorium. As the
pianist on public radio's
"Prairie Home Companion,"
Butch Thompson will perform
vintage jazz and ragtime with
his drummer Hal Smith and
bassist Bill Evans. Appearing
on the same program are Ann
Arbor jazz artists, pianist
James Dapogny and har-
monica virtuoso Peter "Mad-
cat" Ruth.

Kenneth C. Fischer will give
a free Philips pre-concert
presentation at 7 p.m. in the
Rackham Amphitheatre en-

titled "Look No Further Than
Your Own Backyard: Ann Ar-
bor Hometown Stars!"
A special Gala Benefit Con-
cert with Metropolitan Opera
Orchestra, James Levine, con-
ductor; Jessye Norman,
soprano, is set for 8 p.m. April
30 at Hill Auditorium. The
program is the same one that
will be in Carnegie Hall's
Centennial Celebration three
days later: Beethoven's con-
cert aria Ah, Perfido! , Alban
Berg's Three Pieces for Or-
chestra, Richard Strauss' Le

Bourgeois Gentilhomme Suite,
and Wagner's dramatic "Im-
molation" Scene from
Gotterdammerung.

Jewish Music Month
Concert Set By SZ

The Congregation Shaarey
Zedek Cultural Commission
will sponsor a program in
celebration of Jewish Music
Month and in preparation for
Passover, 8 p.m. Mar. 19 at the
synagogue. Judy Stulberg is
chairperson for this event,
which is sponsored by the
Miriam L. Hamburger and
the late Samuel Hamburger
Heritage Endowment for
Sacred Music.
The concert will feature the
Kent State University
Chorale directed by Dr. Carl
Shearer in the premiere per-

ensemble. Most of the
Chorale's forty singers are up-
per division and graduate
music majors. The choir has
been invited to perform for
state, regional, and national
music associations.
As an added feature to the
concert, Dr. Glick, the com-
poser of "Music for Passover,"
will offer a commentary on
his new composition, prior to
its performance.
The concert is open to the
entire community free of
charge.

p.m. Mar. 17 in the Michigan
Theater, Ann Arbor. The per-
formance is sponsored by
Briarwood. Mr. Hoenich will
conduct several concerti for
the more unusual instru-
ments of the orchestra. Fritz
Kaenzig, guest tuba soloist,
and several AASO principal
players will be featured in
works by Gabrielli, J.S. Bach,
Vivaldi, Bruch, Vaughan
Williams and Beethoven.

Temple Hosts
Klezmer Band

The Ethnic Connection will
appear 7:30 p.m. Mar. 10 at
the Birmingham Temple.
The group is a five-piece
