Glickman May Buck Dole
In Coming Senate Race
Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kans.),
the sometimes-nemesis of the
pro-Israel community, may
be facing a serious challenge
from a Jewish congressman.
In the past, Rep. Dan
Glickman, a Democrat, has
considered challenging both
Dole and Sen. Nancy
Kassebaum, another Repub-
lican with a questionable
record on support for Israel.
But in both cases, Mr.
Glickman was strongly
discouraged by the
pragmatic leaders of pro-
Israel political action com-
mittees, who felt that Dole
and Kassebaum were
unbeatable.
But now the equation may
be different.
"There's a sense that Dole
may be vulnerable this time
around," said an official
with one pro-Israel group.
"The mood of anti-
incumbency could still be a
factor in 1992."
And Mr. Dole's repeated

may have pushed some pro-
Israel groups over the brink.
PAC leaders are looking
closely at Dole's poll ratings
— and at Mr. Glickman's
embryonic campaign.

Walesa To Visit D.C.
Holocaust Memorial Site
When Lech Walesa an-
nounced his upcoming
Washington visit, a number
of Jewish groups here began
trying to wangle meetings
with the new Polish presi-
dent.
The winner of that high-
visibility sweepstakes ap-
pears to be the U.S. Holo-
caust Memorial Council.
Thanks to a meeting in
Warsaw in January between
the Polish leader and Miles
Lerman, chairman of the
group's international rela-
tions committee, the Polish
leader has agreed to visit the
Commission offices on Mar-
ch 21, where he will have a
private meeting with Holo-
caust survivors of Polish
origin.
Later in the day, Mr.
Walesa will tour the site of
Lech Walesa:
Bringing an artifact.

battles" turned out to
be something of a dud
— but the mother of all arms
sales may prove a more
difficult battle, at least for
pro-Israel groups.
Before the last Iraqi sur-
rendered, there were reports
that friendly Arab countries
were lining up to acquire
new American arms, in-

wonders that routed the Ira-
qis with such ease.
According to some reports,
there are already up to $30
billion worth of requests in
the hopper.
With the surge in support
for President Bush, oppo-
nents of huge arms to Arab
countries may be facing an
