Akiva Students
Win Contest

Three students from Akiva
Hebrew Day School in Lath-
rup Village have been named
local winners in the 22nd an-
nual America and Me Essay
Contest, sponsored by Farm
Bureau Insurance.
The three students, who
earned the first, second and
third place awards for their
school, are Marcy Eisenberg,
first; Steven Strimling, se-
cond; and Shayna Skarf,
third. All three received
award certificates for their
achievement. The school's
first place winner, Marcy
Eisenberg, will also have her
name engraved on a plaque
for permanent display in the
school.
The first place essay now
advances to the state level
competition, from which the
top ten essays in Michigan
will be selected. The state-
wide winners, who will be an-
nounced in May, will receive
plaques and U.S. savings
bonds valued from $500 to
$1,000. The essayists will be
honored at a banquet in Lan-
sing and at a meeting with
Michigan's top governmental
leaders in late May.
A team of finalist judges
that includes Gov. John
Engler will determine the top
statewide winners.
