The first place essay now advances to the state level competition, from which the top ten essays in Michigan will be selected. The state- wide winners, who will be an- nounced in May, will receive plaques and U.S. savings bonds valued from $500 to $1,000. The essayists will be honored at a banquet in Lan- sing and at a meeting with Michigan's top governmental leaders in late May. A team of finalist judges that includes Gov. John Engler will determine the top statewide winners.
