Final Clearance
At
it fell on hard times years
later. By then, the descen-
dants of the early German
Jews had moved beyond East
Baltimore and their former
synagogue was slated for
demolition so a parking lot
could be built.
But with the help of con-
cerned citizens, a fund-raising
campaign was launched, and
the Jewish Historical Society
purchased and restored the
synagogue.
"So we're very proud of this
building," says Mr. Cohen,
who's been leading tours here
for 18 years. He guides us
downstairs, where we see an
old matzah oven that's set in-
to the stone walls, the small
house of study with its
original brick floors, and the
original mikvah.
Outside again, we walk up
Lloyd Street to B'nai Israel
synagogue, a red brick
building with ornate
Moorish-Gothic design. Built
in 1876, this is Baltimore's
oldest synagogue building in
continuous use. It, too, is
listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Inside, we climb an old-
fashioned staircase to the se-
cond floor sanctuary flooded
with light from 41 windows.
It's a room full of graceful col-
umns and arches, with a
gleaming chandelier and a
delicate gold-and-white
design.
The restoration of this syn-
agogue by the Jewish Histori-
cal Society is another exam-
ple of the determination of
Baltimore's Jews to preserve
their past. It was a joint effort
of the Orthodox congregation,
the Historical Society, and
the Association of Jewish
Charities. City and state
funds also helped to restore a
synagogue badly in need of
repair.
The leaking, rotting roof
was repaired. The solid brass
fixtures were polished. The
handmade ark from Austria
was regilded. The huge
chandelier was taken apart
piece by piece to be repaired.
The Jewish Historical
Society restored it so im-
pressively that it won the
1985 American Society of In-
terior Designers Award for
Historical Preservation and
the 1986 State of Maryland
Preservation Project Award.
Restored B'nai Israel is now
the only functioning syna-
gogue remaining in down-
town Baltimore. Because it's
so close to the Inner Harbor
and the major hotels in that
area, tourists who are obser-
vant Jews now have a conve-
nient — and beautiful — place
to attend services while
they're out of town. After-
wards, they join in the kid-
