dush, sipping red wine and
eating pickled herring, a
longtime tradition with the
congregants.
Finally, we tour the
museum that is the core of
the Jewish Heritage Center.
The permanent exhibit, titled
"And So They Came: The Ex-
perience of Jewish Settlement
in Maryland, 1656-1929"
presents a comprehensive
look at the life of Maryland's
Jews. More than 200 items,
many of them donated by
Baltimore Jews, bring their
history to life.
It begins with the first
record of a Jew in Maryland:
Dr. Jacob Lumbrozo, a doctor
in southern Maryland in the
days before Baltimore was
even founded. Later, in 1773,
Benjamin Levy, who owned a
general merchandise store,
was the first Jewish resident
of Baltimore.
The exhibit covers immigra-
tion, early German-Jewish
families, Jewish businesses,
religious institutions and
more. And it does so with
many concrete objects that
make history come alive. On
display, for example, is the
long blue wool skirt and
white cotton jacket worn by
Rebecca Harris Siegel during
her passage from Russia to
Germany to Baltimore Har-
bor in 1901. It turns out that
Ellis Island was not the only
port of entry for Jewish im-
migrants: many others land-
ed at Baltimore Harbor.
The record of their lives in
Baltimore is documented in
varied displays. We see, for ex-
ample, the faces of 13 workers
in Moses Isaac Berman's vest-
making shop in a rare photo
taken in 1893. ❑
I NEWS 1'
Ethiopian Jews
Getting To Go
Jerusalem (JPFS) — The
long delayed immigration of
Ethiopian Jewry now ap-
pears to be in full swing.
Starting this month,
about 1,500 Ethiopian Jews
will be granted exit visas
each month, Jewish Agency
sources stated. Some 600 are
expected this month.
The Agency expects the
immigration to Israel of the
remaining 20,000 Ethiopian
Jews to be completed in just
over a year.
Ethiopian immigration
was held up despite an
agreement on the matter
between Israel and Ethiopia.
Since October, however,
about 500 Ethiopians have
arrived monthly.
