Bridal Blues

said not at all, we could register for
the real thing.
Then his family, my family and all
of our friends got into the act. My
chosen china pattern set off such a
storm of controversy that I expected
to tune in and see Tom Brokaw de-
livering nightly updates on the fray.
(In the end, I decided to switch rather
than fight. The brouhaha had effec-
tively tarnished my feelings about the
gold-rimmed Haviland Limoges. Who
wants everyday china with bad
karma?)
Meanwhile, my father turned into
Monty Hall, playing "Let's Make a
Deal" long distance from Florida. One
night I told him we had to supply
musicians, a dance floor and a piano
at the wedding site. There was silence,

and then he started ticking off each
name on our guest list.
"Uncle Jim is old; he can't dance.
"Mrs. Klein has been sick; she pro-
bably won't dance.
"And Cousin Mary has a wooden
leg; she doesn't dance. You see, all
that's a waste of money. No one on
our side will dance," he concluded
triumphantly. (On the other side it was
the same stanza, different verse on
the subject of serving spirits at the
reception. No one in their family
would drink either.)
Even longime friends tested my dip-
lomatic skills. One insisted we book
the New Wave reggae band that had
played at her wedding; another re-
quested we serve sushi for dinner; a
third lobbied for a nuptial date before
(or after) our city's high humidity
season so her hair wouldn't look like
Whoopi Goldberg's at the ceremony
Thanks to these well intentioned
souls, I learned quickly that any well
wisher who coos, "It's your day — do
what you want," will inevitably launch
into a litany of unsolicited advice
