For Funerals

hile attending a fu-
neral last April,
Meyer Segal was
approached by a friend who
spoke of a ceremony nearby.
A woman was being buried,
and no one had come to the
funeral.
Moved by the story, Mr.
Segal led a group to the
woman's gravesite, where
the men said Kaddish. That
the woman had no one to
come to her funeral "really
bothered me," Mr. Segal
said.
Brucha Goldstein also at-
tended the funeral and was
saddened at the thought of a
burial with no mourners.
"It was a terrible thing,"
she said. "The Torah teaches
us to consider another Jew
as we consider ourselves. As
I saw the funeral with no one
attending, I kept thinking,
`How could anyone let this
happen?' "
Mr. Segal and Mrs. Golds-
tein decided it should not
happen again and are now
working to form a committee
to say Kaddish at funerals
where the deceased has no
family or friends attending.
The group hopes to recruit
a core of 30-40 men. Ten men
are required for each service,
. as a minyan is needed to say
Kaddish. Volunteers will be
asked only to attend
gravesite services and say
Kaddish.
Mr. Segal and Mrs. Golds-
tein began their project by
placing fliers at area syn-
agogues. Though response
has been limited, Mrs.
Goldstein was impressed by
the callers. They have in-
cluded a number of younger
men, and one who told her,
"Here's my home phone
number, my work number,
my car phone and my FAX,"
she said. "That someone who
has so much is willing to use
it to do a mitzvah really
gives me a good feeling."
The committee is working.
with Chesed Shel Emes fu-
neral home to receive names
of deceased who require
their services; they also hope
to work with Ira Kaufman
Chapel.
Caring for the dead is a
great deed because "you
don't do it for any reward or
personal gain," Mr. Segal
said.
